Year 3 Home Learning Week Beginning 06.07.2020 and 13.07.20
Hello again to my amazing Year 3 Class. It has been great to have some more children in school over the last two weeks and they have settled back into school life well. It was also lovely to see Rosie, Ethan, Ashley and Ruby who joined us on our Zoom meeting this week. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did in school. Mr Worth has been spending time in our class over the last two weeks and the children have enjoyed getting to know him. For those of you not in school he has enjoyed speaking to you and your parents on the phone and he is looking forward to getting to know you all in September. Ashley, it was lovely to receive your message this week and in answer to your question I am very well. I hope you are too. Keep sending your messages through the website to let me know what you are doing at home.

Whilst we have been busy in school, you have also been working hard at home. Ruby, it looks like you have been having lots of fun making a box fort and slime. Congratulations on riding your bike, you must have shown great determination to succeed and your cakes look delicious. Autumn, I am very impressed with your space project. It looked like you and Kaden worked very hard on it. Lillie, your art work is fantastic and I can tell you have been practising. Chloe your cakes look lovely and I am very impressed with your papier mache planet. Remember to keep sending your photos into the Home Learning Showcase and you could be part of next weeks gallery.
English:
Our text this week is called Playground Rescue and is based around Superheroes.
Reading:
Can you read these sentences and use dictionary to find the definition of the words in bold?
It was an ordinary day.
Jo was on her own in the backyard, kicking a ball into the makeshift goal.
She’d been occupying her brothers and sisters.
Sammy, in the meantime, slept soundly in his basket.
His droopy eyelids flickered.
Now can you answer these questions about the text in full sentences? Remember to re-read the story and use it as evidence to support you answer.
What is special about, Sammy, Raja and Jo?
The story talks about Raja’s family. Who is in her family?
Describe what you think Jo’s house is like and why?
The setting of the story is at a park. Can you use adjectives to describe what the park is like?
How do you think the crowd at the bottom of the slide felt when the baby had to be rescued and why?
Would you like to be a Superhero and why?
Grammar:
This week we have been learning about prepositions. They tell us where or when something is happening in relation to something else e.g. on, before, under and after. Here is a short video explaining how a preposition works.
I would now like you to go back to the text and find the prepositions in it. Can you take these prepositions and use them in a sentence?
Writing:
This week I would like you to create your own Superhero and write a non-chronological report about it. You should include these headings although you can also choose your own:
Name
What is there superpower?
What do they look like?
Who is their sidekick?
Who is their enemy?
This about the language you will use as it needs to attract the attention of the reader.
Remember to be as creative as you like. This is your Superhero and they can be as imaginative as you like. I am looking forward to reading all about them on the Home Learning Showcase.
Maths:
This week our focus will be on problem solving. I have included a series of worded problems and you need to decide how you can work out the answer. Firstly you will need to find the key information within the question and then think about which of the 4 operations you will need to use in order to solve it. You will need to use all the skills we have learnt this year so get your thinking caps on!
On a school trip 272 people visit a museum. There are 223 children and 16 teachers, the rest are parents. How many parents are there?
Harry plants 24 rows of trees. Each row has 4 trees. How many trees does he plant?
Tickets for the latest film cost £9 each. Your family has £48 saved up. How many of you can go to the cinema to see the film? How much money will there be left over?

3 quarters of the children are boys. How many girls are there?
Topic:
DT:
This week I would like you to design your Superhero a costume. Think about what material it could be made from and why. What colours would it be? What would it look like?
You should label your design giving reasons for the choices you have made.
PSHE:
I know this has been a strange year but we are almost at the end of your time in Year 3. This week I would like you to think of 3 things that you have done in school that have made you proud e.g. improved handwriting, and talk about them with your parents. I would then like you to set yourself 2 targets for Year 4. Think about what you would like to get better at and you can share them with Mr Worth in September.
Well Being:
It is important that we look after our minds as well as our bodies and doing things we enjoy helps us to relax. This week I would like you to keep a diary of all the things you do this week that you enjoy e.g. read a book, bake a cake etc. I would also like you to think about how it makes you feel whilst carrying out that activity.
Remember that these are just suggestions and there are no expectations for you to complete everything set. If you would some other suggestions then you can use the BBC Bitesize website for activities.
I miss you all very much and I am hoping to see some of you at Summer School. In the meantime take care and stay safe.
Mrs Dickerson
