Year One - Home Learning - Week Beginning 6-7-2020 and 13-7-2020
We have had a lovely week in Year One. The children are settling well into our new routines and are all working hard. This week, we have been writing messages to our friends. The children are looking forward to seeing each other soon. If you are at home and would like to send a message to someone, please use this speech bubble or why not make your own? We would love to see them so feel free to post them into school or why not upload them to the Home Learning Showcase?
English
In English over the next few weeks, we are going to be reading the book Oh the places you’ll go! by Dr Seuss. You can read the book yourself or find a copy of it here. We have been reading 2-3 pages everyday and discussing each page. We have also been finding the rhyming words.
In school, we are reading everyday. It means that we can practise all the skills that we are learning to help us become fluent, enthusiastic readers. Read whatever you can, whenever you can. You could also try the books on the Book Trust Website. This is a link to books and games but feel free to browse the website. Remember, little and often is best.
We have also been starting to read a passage and finding answers to questions in the passage. An adult might need to support the children with this activity but don’t worry, the answers are attached too!
Phonics
In phonics this week, we have been finding different graphemes for the phoneme ar. You can spell ar with an a, as in rather, father, grass, or with an al in words such as calm, palm or half. We have also been learning different ways to spell the ur phoneme. Some words are spelt using the grapheme or, for example: word, worse, worm. Other words are spelt using the grapheme ear to maker the ur phoneme, like in learn, pearl, or earth.
We are also practising reading and writing the ed suffix. You can watch this short clip on suffixes to find out more and complete the activities further down the page. You can also look at these slides which explains more about what sound the ed ending can make. Find your favourite book in your house and look for words with ed endings. What sound can they make? Ask an adult to read these words to you. Practise spelling words ending with ed.
planted
rubbed
skipped
locked
played
walked
Put each word into a sentence. Say the sentence. Count the words in your sentence. Write each sentence then re-read it to check that it makes sense. Don’t forget capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
Maths
This week in Maths we are looking at grouping and sharing and fractions. You can use the videos on the websites below to help you.
White Rose Maths Home Learning Videos- (Weeks 10 and 11)
Oak National Academy- (Scroll down to the lessons on Money and Multiplication and Division)
Alternatively, could try the following:
Set up a role-play shop in your house. Pretend to buy and sell your toys to your family.
Play a game of cards. Deal the cards equally to whoever is playing. How many cards do they need? Who has the highest card? Who has the lowest card?
Buy small packet of sweets and share them equally to members of your family. How many does each person have?
Practise counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s forwards and backwards to 100.
Well-being
This week we have been thinking about the places that we would like to go in the future. Where would you like to go? To the beach? Alton Towers? London? Find out about your favourite place. Why would you like to go there? What would you see? What would you do?
Make a list of things that you are good at. (riding a bike, hula hooping, skipping) Why are you good at them? Can you teach someone else to do one of these things? How does this make them feel?
Think about something you find tricky. How could you get better at it? (More practise, help from a grown-up) Set yourself a target to try and practise every day. After 2 weeks, think about how much you have improved.
Ask an adult to take you on a long walk. You could even take a picnic. What would you need to take with you? Can you help to make the picnic?
Improve your ball skills. Throwing, catching, dribbling or shooting the ball at a target; playing with a ball is great fun and good exercise too!
This week, children in Year One have recorded some jokes, messages and some of their written work for the podcast; No Limits. Why not listen to this week’s episode and sent your own sound file in for next week?
Have a lovely week. Keep reading and don’t forget to send me a message!
Stay safe
