Year 4 Home Learning - 06.01.2021 to the 15.01.2021
Hello to my brilliant Year 4 Class. I hope you are all keeping safe and healthy. I am missing seeing you all and I am looking forward to speaking and working with you this week.
Throughout this time I will be uploading videos to support you with the work I set for English and Maths and we will also be having zoom calls when possible. This will be your chance to discuss any difficulties you may be having and for me to support you with your learning during this time. I will also be providing links to Oak National Academy Lessons. These will each have a specific focus and will be topic based as well as English and Maths.
Remote learning expectations
It is expected that Primary school children will access 3 hours of remote learning every week day whilst learning at home.
New learning blogs will be uploaded every Friday.
We will be adding links and videos to support the children’s learning throughout the week so please check for updates every day.
There will be regular contact between school and the children through phone calls and zoom so that the children will be able to talk about their learning and we will be able to provide feedback.
There will be a contact button direct to the teacher to answer any questions and to send pictures of your work (which can then be placed in our Learning Gallery)
I recommend everyone plays on TT Rockstars every day for 20 minutes.
Reading Challenge
I would like you to read the text about the Romans, click here to view the text. Once you have read through the text, can you use a dictionary or dictionary.com to identify definitions for the vocabulary you are unsure of the meaning of.
Handwriting Challenge
Here is a list of 8 words from our statutory word list, please can you choose 8 of these spellings to practice writing. Make sure you are using your best handwriting! If you want to challenge yourself try and place these words into full sentences.
Week commencing 06.01.2021: calendar, breath, bicycle, peculiar, weight, height, circle, favourite.
Week commencing 11.01.2021 : breathe, thought, February, perhaps, quarter, regular, earth, accident.
Spelling Challenge
This weeks spelling pattern is looking at words ending in the following: sion , ssion, cian.
Examples of words ending in ‘sion’- vision, television, revision, division,
Examples of words ending in ‘ssion’- expression, discussion, permission.
Examples of words ending in ‘cian’ - musician, mathematician, electrician.
Your task is to copy out these spellings, and then practice spelling the words without looking at them. Focus on making sure the ending of the words are spelled correctly.
Then have a go at completing Task A and B below.
English
This week in English, we are looking at making predictions based on what we can see.
Your prediction should be based on what you can see. You can use your inference skills to predict what may be happening. The questions below the pictures will prompt ideas, use your imagination. Answer the questions in full sentences.
Don’t forget every sentence need to start with a capital letter and end in a full stop.
Here is another picture for you to predict what will happen.
Writing
Focusing on the image of the Ogre and the young children.
You will have by now completed your prediction of the picture.
Your task now is to tell me what happens next. Create a story of what happens next using your imagination. Does the ogre attack the children? Does the ogre and the children become friends and go on adventure?
In your story, include speech. Here is a link to help explain how you need to use inverted commmas to punctuate speech.
Click on the link and watch the video as well as completing the task and quiz.
What might they say each to other?
An example of speech may be. The Ogre caught glimpse of the children watching him, the Ogre was petrified and he instantly jumped into the air and screamed loudly, “ Ahhhh, who are you? What are you doing here?”
I look forward to seeing your work, if you would like to, please send this piece of work to me so I can be amazed at your super work.
English:
Monday 11th January.
Reading:
Our reading focus for this week will be summarising. Summarising is when we retell the main parts of a paragraph, chapter or paragraph, in a shortened version.
To help us we use the question words: Who, Where, What, When, Why and How. I have added a video which will talk you through the steps you need to follow.
I would now like you to read the following texts and answer the following questions.
1) Summarise what happens in the first paragraph in one sentence.
2) Look at the paragraph which begins with “No, they’re not!” Sum up what happened in this paragraph in 20 words or less.
3) Explain what Benji saw at lunchtime using 20 words or less.
4) Write a blurb for this chapter using 30 words or less.
Tuesday 12th January:
Reading:
As in the previous session, our focus for today is summarising. I will also be introducing you to our new class text ‘Romans on the Rampage’ by reading the beginning of chapter 1 to you. For your activity today I would like you to watch the video on summarising again and then read and listen to the first 4 pages of the text. I would then like you to summarise what has happened in as few words as you can. You might want to make bullet points of the key parts first and then use these for your summary.
Remember: It needs to be in order.
It does not need lots of description - short sentences to the point.
Use the question words to support you.
Wednesday 13th January:
Grammar.
Our grammar session this week will focus on direct speech. This is when a character is talking within a story. We punctuate this using inverted commas and always have a form of punctuation inside them e.g. comma or full stop. I have included a video to show you how we do this.
I would like you to take these sentences and write them out using the correct punctuation. Remember the inverted commas only go around the part that is being spoken.
Can you now use a dictionary to come up with as many different words for said as you can e.g. screamed, shouted, replied. Remember said is the past tense of say.
Thursday 14th and Friday 15th January
Writing:
Over the next two days I would like to imagine you are able to talk to the raven from our story Romans on the Rampage. Can you think of a list of questions that you would like to ask him e.g. What do you like to eat?
Once you have thought about and written down 10 questions, I want you to think answering them as if you were writing them in a magazine. For example ‘I like to eat long, juicy worms for my breakfast and slimy caterpillars for my lunch,’ replied the raven.
I would like you to answer the questions remembering to punctuate them correctly. Try to use some of the different words for said that you came up with yesterday.
Topic- Week commencing 06-01-2021, 11-01-2021
PSHE:
This week we are thinking about how to view ourselves in a positive manner. I would like you to ask the people in your house to write down three positive things about you e.g. kind, caring etc. I would then like you to write down 3 positive things about yourself. Once you have completed this I would like you to create your own ‘Identity Shield'.’ This should be split into 4 sections. Each section should have a picture of something that you enjoy e.g. swimming or something/someone that is important to you e.g. your pet/family.
History:
This term in history we will be learning about The Romans. This week I would like to create a mind map of all the things you know already about them. It is important that you keep this, as we will be adding all the new things you have learnt over the coming weeks. Once you have completed that, I would like you to use Google Kids Safesearch and find 3 facts about them. You can then message your facts across to me and in our first Zoom meeting we will discuss what things you have found out and what you might like to learn more about.
Art- This term, we are going to be looking at Roman sculptures.
Here are some photographs of Roman sculptures for you to look at.
Whilst looking, think about what they are made of? What is similar, and what is different? Do you think they are detailed? Can you see any patterns? Would they have been easy to make or difficult? Why?
R.E
In RE it is important that we understand different beliefs and understand everyone is entitled to their own belief.
In school, we have been learning about Mosques. Before completing the lesson on Mosques.
Can you answer these questions-
What religion are Mosques associated with?
What do you know about Mosques? (I believe some of you may have visited one on a school trip).
Here is a link to the Oak National academy which will you take straight to the lesson.
Maths.
This weeks Maths learning is focused on securing multiplication facts. By clicking here it will guide you to the oak national academy. Once you have done this it will show you the lessons for the week numbered one to five. On each individual lesson, there is a video to teach the learning, which is shortly followed with an activity worksheet for pupils to complete. The worksheet does not have to be completed online, you can use paper and a pencil to try and solve the questions.
When asked to complete the multiplication patterns by shading in the squares. Can you draw out a 10 cm square by 10 cm square grid? See the example below.
In class this week, we are also consolidating our fact families for the multiplication and division.
A fact family is shown below:
2 x 1 = 2
1 x 2 = 2 (Remember when multiplying a number it does not matter which we way we multiply the two numbers).
2 divided by 1 = 2
2 divided by 2= 1 (Remember when dividing by a number, the answer of the multiplication which is the greatest number goes at the start).
Here are list of examples creating fact families for the 2 times table.
2 x 2 = 4 , 4 divided by 2 = 2, 2 x 3 = 6, 3 x 2 = 6, 6 divided by 3 = 2, 6 divided by 2 = 3, 2 x 4 = 8, 4 x 2 =8, 8 divided by 4 = 2, 8 divided by 2 = 4.
Here is another example below:
Can you carry on the fact family for the rest of the 2 times table starting with 2 x 5 ?
Once completed, pick a times table of your choice to practice the fact families with.
Week commencing 11.01.2021
In Maths this week, I would like you to learn about factors and products.
Here is a link to BBC Bitesize which will help explain what factors are.
Once you have watched the video, and completed the activity and quiz. I will upload another video where I try to explain them to you shortly.
We learnt about measurements and perimeters before the Christmas break, however this would be productive to re-cover.
Before completing the lessons. Can you order these measurements in the correct order from smallest to the largest?
1km, 1cm, 1m, 1mm.
Discuss with someone your answers. Perhaps you could measure objects within your household and apply the correct measurements to them.
If you have completed the Maths work so far, here is a link to the Oak national Academy with further work. Once you have clicked on to the link, it will show you five lessons. Where I advise you to work through one lesson a day.
Feel free to send me any work which you would like to share with others.
Stay safe!
