Year 1 Home Learning Week Beginning 4th January 2021 and 11th January 2021

Hi Year One,

I hope you are all safe and well and have had a lovely Christmas.

Things are a little strange at the moment, but our learning will continue and I will speak to you regularly over the next few weeks. On our class page, there is a button so that you or your adults at home can contact me directly should you have any questions or if you would like to share any of your hard work with me.

Remote Learning Expectations

  • It is expected that primary school children will access three hours of remote learning every week day whilst learning at home.

  • Work will be posted on the website weekly starting from Wednesday 6th January.

  • We will be adding links and videos to support the children’s learning so please check for updates every day.

  • There will be regular contact between school and the children through phone calls and zoom. The children will be able to talk about their learning and we will be able to provide feedback.

  • There will be a contact button direct to the teacher, to answer any questions you have and to send pictures of your work.

Home Learning Week Beginning 11.01.2021

Monday 11th January 2021

Phonics

We will start by recalling our phase 5 sounds by joining in with the video below.

Next, I would like you to think about the letter ‘a’ and the sound it is making in these words: hat, acorn, swan. Does it make the same sound in each word? Can you think of any other words where the letter ‘a’ is making those sounds?

Let’s read some words where the letter a is making the ‘ai’ sound.

apron April bacon acorn bagel lady

Now have a go at writing these words. Can you add buttons and bars?

To end our phonics session for today, choose one or two of our words and write into a sentence. Remember to say the sentence three times before you begin to write. Listen carefully for the sounds.

Check your sentence - does it begin with a capital letter? Does it end with a full-stop? Are there spaces between your words?

Well done year one!

Reading

At the beginning of all of our English lessons, we are going to do some reading. I would like you to spend ten minutes reading a book at your colour book band. Look at your home -reading book to check which band you are reading. If you are still unsure, then ask a grown-up to email me and I will let them know. Follow the link to the Oxford Owl website to select a book at your band. When you reach the page, scroll down. Here you will be able to select levels (see image below) and then book bands. Select the colour band and choose a book.

Oxford page.PNG

Spend ten minutes reading. If possible, read to another member of your family. When you have finished reading, I would like you to spend a few minutes, talking about what you have read. Can you retell the key events or information in your book? Can you include details?

Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here.

English

Over the next couple of weeks, we are going to be learning all about firefighters and the important job that they do. This links in beautifully with our topic for Year 1 and Year 2, The Great Fire of London. By the end of next week, you are going to have written an information page about the fire service for people at home to read.

Let’s begin by finding out what you already know. Here is a photograph. Spend a few minutes saying what you can see. Can you write down any important words about firefighters and the fire service that may be useful over the next couple of weeks.

Firefighters.PNG

Here are some key words:

equipment hose fireproof helmet rescue emergency brave

You are going to choose four key words (you may use four from above or you may choose some of your own words) to find the definition of. Use a dictionary to help you, or click here to use an online dictionary. Talk about the meanings of the words and write them down in your own words.

For example,

Fire drill - a practice of what we must do if there is a fire.

Keep your words and definitions ready for our English lessons this week.

Maths

Over the next two weeks, we are going to be completing our unit on time.

We will be recalling the months of the year, sequencing events in chronological (time) order, measuring time in minutes and seconds, reading and writing the time to o’clock and half-past and using the language of direction, position and movement. We will be using lessons from the National Oak Academy. These lessons match what the children in school will be learning in their maths lessons.

If you have an analogue clock or watch at home, then you can practice telling the time to o’clock and half-past. Grown-ups, encourage your child to tell you the time on the hour or half-past the hour throughout the day to help with this.

Do now: Starting at 0, can you write the number 0 to 20 in order?

Today’s lesson is learning to name and order the months of the year.

Click here to start the lesson.

Art

This half term we will be exploring the work of Claude Monet. I would like you to take some time today researching Claude Monet. Have a go at answering the questions below whilst you are conducting your research.

  • Who was Claude Monet?

  • When was he born and when did he die?

  • Where did he live?

  • Who were his parents?

  • Why was he famous?

  • What kind of artwork did he do?

  • Did you find any other interesting facts?

Also, look at a range of his art work and talk about what they look like and compare these, noting any similarities and differences.

You could create your own fact sheet about Claude Monet to share the information you have learnt with the people that you are at home with.

Today I would like you to listen to this reading of Charlie cook’s favourite book.

Tuesday 12th January 2021

Phonics

We will start our session by writing words containing the ‘ai’ sound. How many words can you record in two minutes? Ready, steady, go!

Today we are going to think about the letter e. Let’s read through some words and think about the sound it is making.

shed he step delay she metal refund

Can you think of any other words to add to these? Write them down, listening carefully for the sounds. Ask a grown-up to check your words and talk about the sound the letter e is making.

We are going to finish today’s phonics by reading through some yes or no questions. Click here.

Reading

Just like yesterday, we are going to begin with some reading. Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here. Remember to select a book from your colour book band. If you come to a word that you are unsure of, I would like you to use your decoding strategies to help you. Today, use your phonics knowledge to help you read the words. Sound it out and blend together. Read the sentence - does it make sense? If not, go back and try again.

English

Following on from yesterday, we are going to read a story with the title, ‘Charlie the Firefighter’. Let’s begin by recapping the meaning of the words that we discussed yesterday.

Watch the video and join in with reading ‘Charlie the Firefighter’. Alternatively, click here to read through the text yourself.

Now we are going to answer some questions about this story.

Year 1, you will answer the questions on the talk cards in challenge 1. You can choose to read the questions and talk about these with a grown-up at home, or you may choose to write your answers down.

Year 2, you will answer questions in challenge 2. You will need a pencil or pen and some paper. You are going to write your answers, making sure you are using information from the text. Use the story video to help.

Challenge 1

Challenge 2

Maths

Recap: Let’s recall the months of the year together.

Do now: Write the months of year in order.

Today, we are going to be learning to sequence events in chronological order. The lesson begins with a song for recalling the months of the year - can you join in?

Click here to start today’s lesson.

Computing and History

In computing today, I would like you to use kiddle (a child safe search engine) to research Samuel Pepys. I would like you to find the answers to the following questions during your research and write them down.

  • When was Samuel Pepys alive?

  • Why was Samuel Pepys famous?

  • Which famous fire did he witness?

  • What did he do during the Great fire of London?

  • What do his diaries tell us?

  • What did he survive?

  • Are there any other interesting information you have found out?

RE

This half term, we will be looking at Judaism in RE.

Feel free to watch the video of Miss Hughes, use the information attached or read through the information on the blog to support your children with this lesson.

Today, we will be looking at the Torah. Look at the pictures below. The Torah is very special to Jews and they believe that it contains key teachings from God.

Jews believe that reading and listening to the teachings in the Torah helps them to keep their two way promise with God, which is at the heart of Judaism.
Reading the teachings from within the Torah is a very important part of Jewish worship.

Watch this BBC clip about Jewish worship. Whilst you are watching it, think about these questions:

  • How is the Torah protected?

  • What do the Jewish people do to respect the Torah?

  • How is the Torah read? (Think about how it sounds, what is used to help the Rabbi read the teachings and which direction it is read in).

Hopefully you will have noticed that the Torah was kept in a special place and was covered. The Jewish people handle the Torah carefully to respect it and do not touch the pages with their fingers. They use a pointer called a Yad when reading from it. The Torah is written in Hebrew and is handwritten; it is read from right to left which is the opposite way to which we read. If it was completely opened out the Torah would be the size of a football pitch.

Have a think - what makes the Torah different to books in school?

Torah.jpg

I would like you to create your own paper scroll. I have attached some instructions but you could just use anything you have available at home. Here is a picture that shows the Hebrew word for Torah; you could write this onto your scroll.

It would be good if you could look at the rules for handling the Torah and write them down as a set of instructions.

Story time

Today I would like you to listen to this reading of Mrs Mole I’m home.

Wednesday 13th January 2021

Read through these words, what sound is the letter ‘i’ making?

grind mind behind kind remind pint mild child

Now have go at writing these words, adding buttons and bars.

Finally, read this sentence and say three times. When you can say it without having to look, have a go at writing it. When you have finished, you can look back and check your sentence.

Can you find the pint of milk behind the door?

Reading

Let’s begin with some reading. Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here. Remember to select a book from your colour book band. If you come to a word that you are unsure of, I would like you to use your decoding strategies to help you. At the end of your reading today, record some sentences about your favourite part.

English

Yesterday, we read Charlie the Firefighter. Recap on the story by watching it again or reading back through the text. Scroll up to Tuesday to do this.

Tomorrow, we will be writing a description of Charlie, including where she works, what she does in her job and what she looks like. Today we are going to plan our writing by recording some key words and phrases. Use the following questions to help you do this. You may also come up with your own questions. Use the story to help you.

  • Where does Charlie work?

  • What job does Charlie do?

  • What does Charlie have to do in her job?

  • What makes Charlie good at her job?

  • What does Charlie look like?

Here are some key words to help you:

Maths

In today’s lesson, you are going to be measuring time in minutes and seconds. It begins with a quiz to recap on our learning yesterday.

Do now: Write the days of the week in order. Can you sort into weekdays and weekend days?

Click here to start the lesson.

PE

Today I would like you to complete one of Joe Wicks’ workouts. In school we will be completing the workout that he records live from the morning. You could choose to do this session live at 9 o’clock or you could complete this later in the day like we are in school. You could also choose to complete one of his other workouts.

Here is the link to the body coach YouTube channel.

Music

I would like you to listen to the following piece of music – you could copy some of the actions as you listen. After you have listened to the whole clip, I would like you to re-watch from 1min58 – 2mins37. I would like you to take note of any of the sounds that you hear and practice these on your own.

Some of the sounds you could have heard were

·       siren

·       shhh

·       tweet, tweet, tweet

·       mah, mah, mah (car beep)

Now be a sound detective and go around your house searching for sounds, these could be sounds you can make with your body or with items. For example, closing a door, shutting a lid, somebody typing on a computer, hitting 2 spoons together. Write down all of the sounds you created – if you don’t want to write words or phrases you could draw a picture to represent each sound.

I would like you to have a go at using a device at home to record these sounds.

Story time

Today I would like you to listen to this reading of Handa’s surprise.

Thursday 14th January 2021

Phonics

Let’s begin, by practising our spellings. Here are today’s words:

have like were here

Now read these words:

hot no so drop cold both

What sound is the letter ‘o’ making in each of these words?

Click here to read some more words - sound them out and blend together. Notice the sound the letter ‘o’ is making. It does not always make the same sound.

Choose some of those words to make your own sentences. Say your sentence three times before writing it down.

Reading

Let’s begin with some reading. Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here. Remember to select a book from your colour book band. Spend ten minutes reading your chosen book or finishing a book you have already started. Tell somebody at home about the book you have read today. What was it about? What did you like about it? What did you dislike? Would you recommend it to a friend?

English

Let’s recap on the week so far. We have been learning about firefighters by reading a book called ‘Charlie the Firefighter’. At the end of this unit of learning, we will have written our own information page all about Firefighters. Yesterday, we did made notes to plan for our description of Charlie the firefighter. Read back through your plan.

Today, we are going to write a description of Charlie. We are going to write in full sentences by saying our sentence before we write it down. We are going to listen carefully for the sounds in our words. We will remember to use spaces between our words.

Year 1, we will begin our sentences with a capital letter and end them with a full-stop. I would like you to write five sentences about Charlie, using your planning from yesterday.

Year 2, remember to punctuate your sentences with capital letters, full-stops, question marks or exclamation marks. Can you include some expanded noun phrases in your writing? For example,

Charlie wears a yellow, fire proof jacket to protect her body.

Maths

In today’s maths lesson, you are going to be reading and writing the time to o’clock.

Do now: Talk about what you have done so far today. Use the words: before after next then

Click here to begin your lesson.

This term our science topic is living things and their habitats. This week, I would like you to explore the life processes of living things. Look through the information on the PowerPoint with an adult or read by yourself. There is also a video attached to help you to understand.

Once you have looked at the information and watched the video draw a picture of something that you know is living. Underneath, write a sentence to describe how your living thing does each of the seven life processes.

Movement – moving

Respiration – breathing

Sensitivity – feeling

Growth – growing

Reproduction – making new life

Excretion – getting rid of waste

Nutrition – getting food

Phonics

Recall phase 5 sounds in the video below:

Now read through these words.

but unit mug music uniform playful push muddy pulll

Can you sort the words into two lists based on the sound made by the letter ‘u’?

Cover the words and have a go at writing some for yourself, listening carefully for each sound. Can you add some of your own words?

Finally, click here to read some sentences, using your phonics knowledge.

Reading

Let’s begin with some reading. Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here. Remember to select a book from your colour book band. Spend ten minutes reading your chosen book or finishing a book you have already started.

English

We are going to begin by writing the alphabet in lower-case letters. Try your best to form each letter correctly. Can you write the alphabet in capital letters? Pick out three letters that you think you could improve on and practice writing them.

Take out your writing from yesterday. We are going to read through our own sentences to check they make sense. Read your sentences out loud and listen to yourself. Do you need to make any changes? If so, then do that now.

You can choose whether to add more sentences to your writing or improve the sentences you have written. Choose an idea from the list below.

  • Choose one sentence and read it through. Are there any words that you can improve upon to make your writing sound better? Write out your improved sentence.

  • Let’s check your punctuation. Have you started each sentence with a capital letter? Highlight the capital letters as you check. Does each sentence end with punctuation (full-stop, question mark, exclamation mark)? In a different colour, highlight your punctuation.

  • Checking spelling - circle some words that may not be spelled correctly, perhaps they just don’t look right. Use a dictionary or dictionary.com to check the spelling of your chosen words. Correct any that are incorrect and write three times.

Remember to take a photograph of your super work and email across so that I can post in our class gallery.

Well done Year 1 and 2!

Maths

 Reading

I would like you to have a go at reading the story about The Enormous Turnip with an adult at home. Think about whether you have heard this story before. Was the story exactly the same? What was the same? What was different? You could also watch this version on YouTube to help you.

I would like you to have a go at answering the questions. There are three versions at varying difficulty so choose one that will challenge you. You may need to ask an adult at home to support you with this.

I would also like you to choose a book from home that you enjoy reading. Could you create your own questions for someone at home to answer about the book you have chosen?
Remember to use open questions so that the answer is not just yes or no.

·       who

·       what

·       where

·       when

You could also write a book review to recommend this book to a friend. I have attached a book review template that you could use or you could create your own.

Writing

This week I would like you to think about the story of the enormous turnip, think about which characters are in the story. I would like you to think about how you could change the characters in the story like we did for The Magic Porridge Pot.

You could create your own story map to help you with your story using words and pictures. Make sure you add words and phrases to your story map that would be helpful in your story.
Remember to say your sentence out loud, three times, before you write it down. Listen carefully for the sounds, leave spaces between your words and finish your sentence with a full-stop. What do we use at the beginning of our sentence?

We use a capital letter at the beginning of our sentence.

If I was to write my own version I would call it ‘The Gigantic Apple’. Click on the link to read my story.

Maths

This week we are going to focus on numbers up to 20. Please click on the following lessons to access your learning.

Wednesday - Can I count from 1 - 19 and match abstract and pictorial representations?

Thursday - Can I count numbers to 20 by counting ten and then counting on?

Friday - Can I position numbers to 20 on a number line?

Science

In science we have been looking at materials and their properties. I would like you to watch the following video from BBC bitesize about recycling.

Have a go at researching which materials can be recycled. Maybe you could also find out how these materials are recycled and what happens to materials that are not recyclable.

I would like you to create your own poster for somebody else to help them to understand why recycling is important; what can be recycled; what happens to recycled materials and what happens to materials that can not be recycled.

Art

This term we have been looking at sculpture. Within school we have used a range of techniques to mould clay. It would be great if you could create your own sculpture using a range of objects from home. This could be made from recycling or you could use objects such as cups, spoons, forks, cushions, shoes. Be as creative as you can with your sculptures.

Health and Well-being

I would like you to think about yourself this week. Draw a picture of yourself and write everything positive about yourself around the outside. Think about what you do to help others, your characteristics, things that you do in school and outside of school.

Stay safe and always remember how amazing you are!

I look forward to seeing you all soon,

Mrs Claxton
