Year 5 Weekly Blog 05/01/21 - 15/01/21

Hello to all of my wonderful Year 5 children. I hope you have all had a fantastic Christmas, I was so looking forward to seeing you all and hearing all about what you have been up to. We have all got to stay at home to do our work for a little while so please find below a list of activities I need you to complete over the next week. I know you will all try your hardest because you always do so don’t worry over anything, do the best you can and I will be in touch one day this week to say hello. Remember, how amazing you all ok.

We have had such a fantastic start the school year and it is important that we continue with our learning throughout these strange times.

Remote learning expectations

  • It is expected that Primary school children will access 3 hours of remote learning every week day whilst learning at home.

  • New learning blogs will be uploaded every Friday.

  • We will be adding links and videos to support the children’s learning throughout the week so please check for updates every day.

  • There will be regular contact between school and the children through phone calls and zoom so that the children will be able to talk about their learning and we will be able to provide feedback.

  • There will be a contact button direct to the teacher to answer any questions and to send pictures of your work (which can then be placed in our Learning Gallery).

Reading Challenges

Challenge 1

I would like you to read the newspaper article, ‘Captain Tom Morgan’. Once you have read through the text, can you use a dictionary or dictionary.com to identify the definitions for the following vocabulary:

Landmark

Veteran

Exceed

Humbleness

Astonishing

Honorary

Colonel

If there are any other pieces of vocabulary you do not understand within the text, make sure you also identify the definitions for those too.

Once you have understood the text, please complete the reading comprehension questions about the text. Remember, to refer to the text to check your answers!

Challenge 2 (Added to the blog on 06.01.21)

Can you read the following text ‘History Hackers: Victorian Venture’. When reading through the text, make sure you make a note of any vocabulary you don’t understand. You check the meaning of this vocabulary using a dictionary or dictionary.com.

Once you have read through the text, have a look at these answers. These are the answers to some comprehension questions. All the answers can be located in the Victorian Venture text. Your second reading challenge is to tell me what the comprehension question was based on the answer.

Example:

Answer: The fancy dress shop.

I think that the question could have been ‘Where could they get an Oliver Twist costume from?’ because in the text Charlie says “We can go to the fancy dress shop, they’ve always got Oliver Twist costumes in stock”.

Once you have completed this, here are the original questions so you can check if you were correct!

Happy Healthy Children Week (Added to the blog on 08.01.21)

This week, we were due to celebrate Happy Healthy Children Week. Happy Healthy Children Week is where we engage in a range of activities that focus on both our physical and mental health. The activities will include discussing our emotions, how we handle our emotions, how different situations might make us feel, how we can keep both our minds and body healthy and the importance of exercise. We have all had a tricky year, therefore it is important we support the children with how we can deal with our worries and emotions.

I have put together a powerpoint, which talks the children through the different activities I would like them to complete and gives them examples to support them with those activities. I would love to see the work you produce for Happy Healthy Children Week, you can share this with me using the contact Miss Gallagher box on the Year 5 class page.
