Covid Update

As you know, I like to be completely open and honest with you… so you won’t be surprised with me telling you, that the last couple of weeks have been very tricky in school, covering staff absences.

Last week we had seven members of staff off with Covid related absence - either they had it themselves, or they were looking after their own children, who had contracted Covid. As usual, the staff of Winshill Village rose to the challenge, and covered their colleagues to ensure that face to face learning could continue. Apologies if there has been some disruption to your child’s usual day, but they have continued to receive high quality learning. As it currently stands, we only have one member of staff absent and hopefully they will be back next week.

With regards to children, we have had eight positive cases in the past week, luckily all the children have only suffered minor symptoms like headaches or sore throats. We continue to be robust in our Covid procedures, with plenty of ventilation, sanitisation and regular deep cleans. As yet, there is little evidence of in-school transmission, although this obviously can’t be completely eliminated.

Compared to a lot of schools, we seem to be “getting off lightly”. There are some local schools: where positive cases are in double figures; where classes have had to shut, and remote learning has been introduced. I aim to avoid this where possible, and would only close classes as a last resort.

Therefore, I would like us all to maintain our vigilance. I know mask wearing is no longer compulsory in England, but staff will continue to wear masks in school, and I would really appreciate it if parents continued to wear masks when on the school grounds, at the beginning and at the end of the day.

It would also be beneficial, if parents could continue to test their children regularly with lateral flow tests, as this will identify cases quicker and help reduce the spread. Twice a week would be ideal and remember if a child is showing symptoms, you may wish to consider a PCR test.

Fortunately, for the majority Covid is a minor illness, however the disruption to learning that isolation causes is best avoided where possible. Therefore, your support would be gratefully appreciated. Of course, our Covid precautions, will be reviewed regularly. Thank you for your support in this matter.
