Merry Christmas!
An incredible term!
At this point in the term, I normally wax lyrical about; how wonderful the children are, how hard the staff have worked and how Winshill Village is progressing well on its improvement journey. And this year will be no different: the children have made huge steps forward - the positive conversations at parents evening support this and I am delighted to tell you that 88% of our Year 2 children passed the phonics screening this term - brilliant! The staff have worked tirelessly to give your children the support and the best education possible - we have had a number of visitors in school, from other schools and from JTMAT - who have been impressed with the teaching and learning going on in school. Despite the disruption of the pandemic, Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School still continues to improve and provide your child with high quality teaching and learning.
However, the impact of the pandemic, should not be under estimated. In some ways, this last term has been the most difficult since the pandemic started - more difficult than lockdown, more difficult than remote learning, more difficult than bubbles. Why? Well, we all have been trying to continue as normal, to continue with the high expectations and determination to succeed, but this ‘normality’ is mixed in with anxiety regarding Covid cases, worry about poorly relatives and confusion over ever-changing rules. All of us - staff, children and families alike - have been impacted by Covid and the disruption is has caused. Whatever your political slant, whatever your views on the pandemic, you can’t help but be affected by it, and with the new variant, it looks like restrictions will be here for a while.
Despite all this, we have persevered, we have shown resilience and we have shown determination. I am more proud now - more than I ever have been - of the community of Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we have not only survived, we have thrived. Your children are doing amazingly academically, they are getting the emotional support where needed, we have further developed our links with St Marks, trips have started again, we had three brilliant Christmas productions, a face to face parents evening and some wonderful Christmas activities. We have managed to keep Covid out of school (for the most part, compared to other schools) by everyone following the clear guidelines, and helping each other keep safe, and going beyond government guidelines.
This term should not be defined by the pandemic, but the last few months have emphasised the hard work of all the staff, how they go above and beyond to support and educate your children. It has also shown us how resilient and adaptable the children are and how important it is to have such a close and supportive community. Although it has been a challenging term, it has also been incredible - we have achieved so much. Thank you all for your continued support. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and I wish you all the best for 2022. Thank you. Miss Goodson

With colds, flu, covid tests and positive cases, attendance has taken a bit of a hit this term, although it is slightly above the national average in these Covid times.
