Year 3 English Home Learning 25.01.2021-29.01.2021

Hello to my amazing Year 3 Class. I can hardly believe that we are now beginning our fourth week of home learning, it has gone incredibly quickly and we are missing you all terribly. I want to take a moment to tell you how proud I am of each and everyone of you. Having spoken to you on the phone and seen the work you are doing, it is clear you are working hard for your parents and family at home. Keep It up.

This week I would like you to include reading into your timetable. Try to read for at least 15 minutes each day if possible.

Monday 25th January

Spelling:

Our Year 3 and 4 statutory words for this week are:

possession - something that somebody owns.

therefore - used to show the result of something (He hurt his knee therefore he was crying)

although - despite something (She went outside to play although it was raining)

describe - to give a description of someone or something.

forward (verb) - to move in a direction. Forward has many other meanings - how many can you find?

Today, I would like you to write these words out as dots and then join them together. You can use a pencil, pen, crayons - the choice is yours.

Once you have completed this, I have attached a wordsearch (all in capital letters) with our last 3 weeks words hidden inside. Can you find them all.

Reading: Can I retrieve information from a non-fiction text?

This week our reading focus will be retrieval and we will be learning about retrieving information from a non-fiction text.

When we are retrieving information from a text. it means we are finding the information and taking it out. Unlike inference, retrieval means the answers will be directly stated in the text. I have included a video to talk through how we can ‘retrieve’ specific information from a non-fiction book.

For your activity today I would like you to find the answer to these questions from the short pieces of text. Remember to answer in full sentences. The paragraphs of text have been included as documents. Use the title of each document to work out which one will have the answer to the question.

City Dangers Citizens and Rulers Marriage Army Kit

1) Who lurked in dark alleyways at night?

2) Why did they wear metal helmets?

3) Who did women belong to during Roman Times?

4) Why were Roman marriages usually arranged?

5) What were many of the city districts like?

6) Why were the woollen tunics made in red?

7) How old were boys before they could get married?

Tuesday 26th January

Spelling:

Our spelling focus this week will be the suffix ly. When we add ‘ly’ onto the end of an adjective it changes it into an adverb e.g. sad becomes sadly. There are some rules that we need to follow when using this suffix, these are:

If word ends in y – change y for an i.

If word ends in c – add ally

If word ends in le – take off le and change to ly.

Here is a link to the BBC Bitesize page which has some short videos explaining these rules. For your activity today I would like you to look at the attached document. On it there are lists of adverbs with the ly suffix. Unfortunately I forgot the rules so I wrote them down in many different ways. I would like you to read the different spellings of each word and circle or write out the correct spelling of them.

Reading: Can I retrieve information from non-fiction text?

Our reading focus today will continue to be retrieval. In the previous lesson we were using short paragraphs of text, today we will be using longer pieces which will mean you need to use your skimming and scanning skills. If you need to remind yourself of what this is, then spend a few minutes re-watching the video. Below is a document that contains several pages from a non-fiction book about the Romans. You will need to use your skimming and scanning skills to select the correct page (look at the heading) and than looking at the subheadings to narrow down the section you need to read in order to find the answer to the questions.

The Romans

1) What happened to women’s hairstyles over the centuries? 2) Where would you often find a Roman school?

3) Why was one of the Army camps made up of tents? 3) Why were you not able to swim in the Roman Baths?

5) What were books usually made from? 6) What were the floors made up of in expensive Roman houses?

7) Who went to school? 8) What were the largest and smallest weapons the Army used?

9) How did Romans get rid of the sweat and grime everyday? 10) When did the rich Romans go shopping?

Wednesday 27th January

Spelling: Today we will be continuing to learn about words that have the suffix ly on the end. Below are some anagrams (words that are jumbled up) and their definitions. I would like you to unscramble the word and then write it out with the definition. Good luck!

ldasy – in a manner that shows sadness. alpiphy – in a joyful way. ybuatlifleu – in a way that pleases the senses.

klignjyo – in a funny way. glainry – in a furious way. eflyihlss – in a way where they think only of themselves.

Writing: Can I organise paragraphs around a theme?

Our writing focus this week will be non-chronological reports. These are information texts that do not need to be written in a specific order e.g. time. Non-chronological reports are split into paragraphs which will usually have a subheading to tell you what each paragraph is about. I have included a powerpoint to talk you through what a paragraph is and how they are used in non-fiction texts. There is even a short exercise for you to complete at the end.

Paragraphs

For your activity today, I would like you to look at the following pieces if text and write your own subheadings to go with them. Once you have completed them, ask someone else in your house if they agree with your choice and why? Can you use the internet or books you have at home to add any additional information to these paragraphs. Remember it must be on the same them?

Thursday 28th January.

Spelling: For your spelling today I would like you to fill in the missing word from the sentences. I have included the words at the bottom but you will notice I have not added the ly suffix to them. Think about how you are going to change the word and what rules you will need to follow.

Missing words.

Can I plan what I am going to write about?

Today we are going to plan a non-chronological report about our school as this is something that we already know a lot about. Next week you will be writing your own report including your own title and subheadings. This week however, I will provide you with the title and subheadings to support your planning.

I have included a link to the Oak National Academy lesson to explain what a non-chronological report is and what we should include in it.

Below is a template for your plan. It includes the title and the subheadings you need to include. Try to include the key information for each subheading as this will help you to write up your report tomorrow. Remember a plan only needs to be keywords and phrases. I have also included an example to give you some ideas.

Non-chronological Report Plan. Example non-chronological report plan.

Friday 29th January.

Spelling: For your spelling activity today I would like you to make a list of words that have the ly suffix and use them in silly sentences. They can be as crazy as you like.

Writing: Can I write a non-chronological report using paragraphs? Can I proof-read and edit my work?

Today, I would like you to use your plan from yesterday’s session to write a non chronological report. You should include an introduction (refer back to the Oak National Academy lesson from yesterday for support) and each paragraph should begin with a new subheading. Try to include as much detail as possible and remember it should all be facts. I have included a checklist below so you can see what needs to be included.

Remember a report can be presented in many different ways including a poster. You might want to include photographs or pictures, a did you know section or even a fact box. The choice is yours.

Once you have written your report, I would like you to proof-read and edit it. Remember editing is making changes to your writing. This can be spelling, punctuation or vocabulary.

I am looking forward to reading your final reports so please remember to take a photo and email them to me.
