Nursery Home Learning - 25th January 2021 to 29th January 2021
Hello to all of our Little Winners and Little Stars!
We hope that you are all keeping well.
This week, we are going to be looking at two new nursery rhymes that both have a theme of farm animals; Old MacDonald had and Farm and This Little Piggy. We have attached some videos and ideas of activities that you could complete. If you are finding these activities difficult to fit in with your schedule, please just remember three words. Chat, Play, Read. If you manage to get these into your day, this is the best way that you can support your child at home.
Old MacDonald had a Farm
Learn the song Old MacDonald had a Farm. What animals did he have on the farm? What noise do those animals make? Watch the video of Ferne and Rory had some Pets. Can you make up a song for your own family?
This Little Piggy
Learn the This Little Piggy. A great rhyme to practise in the bath or when getting ready for bed. It can also encourage children to put their socks on independently, and take them off. Encourage children to count their fingers and toes, making sure that they say each number as they are touching each toe.
On the Farm Activities
Paint a farm animal- Use any paints you have to paint a farm animal. What colour is it? How many legs does it have? You could paint on paper, use a paper plate, a hand print or a kitchen roll tube. For some more ideas of how to paint animal pictures, please see the pictures below.
Make a salt dough farm animal. Salt dough is easy to make. You can add colouring to the mixture or paint it when it has dried. Click the link for an easy salt dough recipe.
Making your own farm set- Junk box modelling. The beauty of junk modelling is that the materials are relatively worthless so children can be given the freedom to build what they want, with the simple addition of resources such as tape and glue, and at times help from an adult. The flexibility and abundance of using everyday ‘junk’ can give your child enormous learning benefits and unrivalled creative opportunities Junk box materials could include cereal boxes, kitchen rolls, bottle tops, yoghurt pots and shoe boxes. Helpful hint- Try adding a little PVA glue to your paint, this will help the paint not crack on the box when it dries.
Set up your own farm shop- Having a varied range of props and materials is beneficial when creating a farm shop role play area. You could include resources such as chairs, rugs, tables, place settings, telephones, utensils etc. If you already have any children’s kitchen role play units these could be added to your farm shop area to include a café area. Your child will soon become a shop keeper or shopper ready to fill up their basket! Remember- use what you have!
Phonics
Our phonics activities for this week will be split into Little Winners and Little Stars. Children can access both, depending on what they enjoy and whether they are ready to listen to sounds in words.
Little Winners
Listen to the sounds in the video. Where would you hear this sound? What is making the sound?
Go on a sound hunt. With a grown up, explore sounds in different rooms in your house. Close your eyes and listen carefully.
Use a saucepan and wooden spoon to make a sound. Can You make the same sound as your grown up? Can they make the same sound as you? Can you make a loud sound or a soft sound?
Little Stars
Make a collection of objects that start with the sounds s. You may find a saucepan, some sellotape or a sausage. How many objects can you find? When you have done this, you could repeat for sounds a and t.
Play I-spy with my little eye. Start with 3 objects that all start with different sounds. Encourage your child to say the name of each object. Can they identify which object start with the chosen sound?
Maths
This week in maths, we will be continuing to count to 5, and then 10, and to start to recognise some numbers. Counting is learnt best when it is used throughout the day during everyday activities. So, count cushions on the sofa, how many nuggets they have on their plate and how many steps there are to the front door. Encouraging children to count in different situations will also support them to count when they are playing. If you have made a farm shop, how many carrots are there? How many potatoes can they carry? The following videos will also support this learning.
You can also find lessons on counting at the Oak National Academy. This link will take you to lessons for Numbers within 10. Can you complete lessons 1 and 2?
Stay Active
Children love to be active! If you can, go for a walk or visit a park everyday to help everyone feel better. The videos below will also allow children to burn off some excess energy and have lots of fun.
Story Time
As always, we would encourage you to read regularly to your child. Encourage them to look through books, discuss the pictures and talk about what is happening in the story. This is great for your child’s development. It will help with their understanding, their speech and language skills and provide them with new experiences. If you would like to borrow some books, please get in touch and we can arrange this, Covid secure. Below are some more stories for children to watch.
We hope that you have a good week. Don’t forget to send any pictures of your learning to ce.williams@win.jtmat.co.uk so that we can add them to our Nursery Gallery.
