Year 3 English Home Learning 18.01.2021 - 22.01.2021

Hello to my fantastic Year 3 class. It was lovely to see some of you on our zoom call last week and those that were not able to join us, it was nice to talk to you on the phone. I will be ringing you all at some point during this week so if you have any questions you will be able to ask me then. If you have anything you want to talk to me about before then,or just want to show me your amazing work, please email me. There is a link on our class page. I would like to see at least one piece of work from each of you by the end of this week and I will upload them into the class gallery.

Monday 18th January

Spelling: Year 3 and 4 Statutory Words.

This weeks statutory words are: accident, accidentally, heart, minute and position.

These are the definitions:

Accident - Something that happens by chance and often cause injury.

Accidentally - When something happens that was not deliberate.

Heart - A muscle in our body that pumps blood around the body.

Minute - A unit of time which is 60 seconds long.

Position - The way in which someone or something is placed or arranged.

I would like you to practise writing these in different ways. You could use felt tip pens and bubble writing, you could write them as rainbow words or even or even use different fonts (if you are using a computer) the choice is yours. Once you have done this I would like you to put them into sentences. They can be as crazy as you wish.

Reading: Can I make simple inferences based on what is being said and done?

This week in our two reading sessions, the focus will be on inference. I have put together a powerpoint to explain what inference is and how we use it to answer questions about a picture or text.

Pascal-Campion-memories.jpg

Below is a picture titled ‘Memories.’ For you reading activity today, I would like you to answer the following inference questions about it. Remember to use evidence from the picture to support you answers.

  • Where do you think this is?

  • When is this? (What time of year/day?)

  • What is the woman doing?

  • Who carved the heart into the tree? Why did they do it? Why this tree?

  • Why is she touching it?

  • Why is this picture called ‘Memories’?

  • What is she remembering?

  • How does she feel?

Tuesday 19th January

Spelling: This week in spelling our focus will be the suffix ‘ation.’ A suffix is added onto the end of a root word and changes it. When we add ‘ation’ onto a verb, it changes it to a noun e.g. inform - information. I have included a video to explain the rules you need to follow.

For your activity today I would like you to make a list of words that have the ‘ation’ suffix. How many will you be able to find? Remember the root word must be able to stand on its own. You can use the following website to help you: Spellzone

Reading: Can I make inferences based on what is being said and done?

I have shared with you the ‘Romans on the Rampage’ text from the previous week. I would like you to read through it again and answer these questions, using evidence to support your answer. You can refer back to the powerpoint from yesterday to help. In the questions I will refer you to a page in the text. Use a pen/pencil/highlighter, if you can, to highlight any information which might help you to find the answer.

Romans on the Rampage.

1) What type of animal do you think is narrating the story and why? (Page 1 - paragraph one)

2) Why does the narrator tell us that the Romans are ‘not racing ships?’ (Page 3 - paragraph one and two)

3) Why do you think Scorcha does not have a chariot? (Page 4)

4) Do you think the raven likes being called ‘Croakbag’ and why? (Page 5 - paragraph 1)

5) Why do you think Jellus is jealous of Scorchio? (Page 6)

6) In the story Croakbag says ‘I might goes as far as to say that young Hysteria has a crush on him.’ Who do you think she has a crush on and why might that be? (Page 6)

Wednesday 20th January

Spelling: Today in our spelling session we will be continuing to look at the suffix ‘ation.’ The activity is included in the document below. Remember to think about the rules you may need to follow.

Grammar: Can I use fronted adverbials and punctuate them correctly?

Our grammar focus for this week will be fronted adverbials. An adverbial is a word or phrase that gives more detail about a verb. If it is a fronted adverbial, it means it comes at the beginning of the sentence. I have include a link to the Oak National Academy lesson on fronted adverbials for you to complete today. Once you have completed this, I would like you to add some fronted adverbials to the sentences below. I have included an example to help you. I brush my teeth - Before I go to bed, I brush my teeth. You may wish to extend them further by adding a conjunction.

My Mum read us a story. I ran through the field. The girl scored a goal. We walked to the shop. An alien spaceship landed on the playground. The brother and sister were playing a game.

Thursday 21st January

Spelling: For today’s spelling activity, I would like you to fill in the missing words in these sentences. All the missing words contain the suffix ‘ation.’ I have included the words at the bottom for you to choose from.

Missing words

Writing: Can I plan what I am going to write about using keywords and phrases?

Can you re-read the first part of our text Romans on the Rampage (I have also included the next two pages). As you will notice, I have not included the end of the chapter. Discuss with someone else in your house what you think might happen. Are there clues in the text that might lead you to think this.

Today we are going to decide what we think might happen next and plan your own ending. You will need to include: A problem, resolution and ending.

Problem - What happens to the characters in the story. Resolution - How is the problem solved. Ending - How do the characters react/what do they do once the problem has been resolved.

I have included a powerpoint to give you some ideas for each section. You can be as imaginative as you wish, remember it is your story.

Remember when writing a plan, you should only use keywords and phrases. These should include some interesting descriptive language, conjunctions and some fronted adverbials. This will help you when writing your ending. Here is a plan for you to use if you wish. I have included a space for you to add a picture as this will help you add more detail. I have also included a copy of my plan to help you get started.

Friday 22nd January

Spelling: For your spelling activity today,I would like you to look back at the words we have learnt this week (ation suffix) and choose 6 to write into sentences.

Writing: Can I write a chapter ending using the grammar features I have been taught?

Grammar feature.PNG

Today I would like you to use the plan that you did yesterday to write your ending to the first chapter on Romans on the rampage. Think about how you can take the notes you made and turn them into a detailed sentence.

Here is the beginning of my problem using the plan I wrote for yesterday’s session.

Suddenly, there was a thunderous bang, that echoed around the village. Two large, golden chariot wheels were flying through the hot, sticky air. In the arena, people were screaming loudly and waiting patiently to see if anyone was hurt.

You should try and include the grammar features we have learnt so far.

Here is a mindmap to help remind you. Those written in red should be included in every piece of writing you do.

Remember to email your finished pieces to me so that I can read them. I look forward to receiving them. Keep working hard Year 3.
