Year 3 English Home Learning 08.03.21-12.03.21
Good morning to my amazing Year 3 class. Here we are again for another week of home learning. I know this is not how we were hoping to be learning this week but we will all be back together soon in the classroom.
We will be having a Zoom call on Tuesday 9th March at 2pm. Our focus will be on Well-being. Before the call, I would like you to write down at least six positive things about yourself e.g. I am thoughtful because _______. You can ask the people in your house hold for ideas. I would then like you to bring these along to our Zoom call for us to share and discuss.
Monday 8th March:
Spelling - Our spelling focus for this week this week is the word ending tion. When we add tion onto the end of a word, it changes the action to the result of the action e.g. subtract = subtraction.
Like all suffixes and word endings, there are rules that we need to follow. When we add tion onto a word that ends in te, we need to take it off before we add tion e.g. complete = completion.
If the world already ends in t we just add ion.
Below is a list of words. I would like you too add tion onto the end and then, using a dictionary, write the definition for each word.

Warm up - Can you fill in the missing words in these sentences by adding adjectives and adverbs. Remember an adjective describes and noun and adverb describes a verb (action) so think about which will fit into the spaces.

Reading - Can I ask questions to improve my understanding of a text?
Today we are going to be thinking about asking questions and how these can help us to gather more information about a text/picture from the author or artist. We use the question words who, where, what, when, why, which and how.
I would like you to read the following text. What further information would you like to find out? Remember, these need to be questions that I don’t already know the answer to or that I may have had to make inferences about for example: Why does the Mum look at her watch? I would like you to write at least 5 questions that you could ask the author in order to find more information about the text.
Tuesday 9th March:
Spelling - So far this term we have learnt two different ways of writing the suffix that sounds like shun - tion and sion.
We know that if a word ends in te or t, we add take them away and add tion. If the word ends in de or se we take those away and add sion.
Today, I would like you to think about the suffixes tion and sion and sort these words into the correct headings. Remember to add the suffix onto the ending when writing it in the correct column.
Warm up - Can add inverted commas, and the correct punctuation inside them, to these sentences to make them correct?

Mum called What would you like for tea
Can I make simple inferences based on what is being implied?
Today we will using the text from the previous session Tom’s exciting day and making inferences about it. Remember inference is when something is not directly stated and we need to look for clues in the text to find the answer. I have included the video from our previous session for you to refer back to.
Can you read the text and answer the following questions. Remember to use evidence from the text to support your answer.
1. How do we know Tom felt excited in Paragraph One? Try and find all the clues.
2. Why do you think Tom chuckled to himself when he went outside in Paragraph Two?
3. Where do you think Tom is going? Explain why you think this.
4. Pretend you are Tom. Write down how you are feeling and what you are thinking as you travel in the taxi.
5. Why has Tom packed sunglasses?
6. Why do you think Olivia and Tom were worried when Mum went back into the house to get Buster?
7. What do you think Olivia was pointing to when she said “they look like giant birds!”?
8. What do you think happened when Mum and Dad looked at their watches in paragraph four?
9. Pretend you are Dad at the end of the passage. Write a few sentences explaining your thoughts and feelings.
Wednesday 10th March:
Spelling - Today, we will be using our application skills to find the missing words into sentences. All the missing words will end in sion and I have provided the words for you. However, I have not added sion onto them so you will need to think about the rule you need to follow.

Grammar - Can I use the possessive apostrophe with singular and plural nouns?
In today’s session we will be learning about using the apostrophe to show possession - belonging to someone or something. I would like to watch this short video and complete the following activities.
Once you have completed these, look at the words from the sorting activity and pick three to include in your own sentences.
Thursday 11th March:
Spelling - Today will be our final session on adding tion. Today I would like you to write your five sentences using some of the words we have learnt this week. You may even decided to use some that you have found on your own. Remember to think about the rules you will need to follow when adding tion.
Can I write a recount?
Today, we are going to be learning about a recount. A recount is where we retell a past experience or event. These can be written in many forms, including a diary or newspaper report.
It should always be in the past tense and written in the first or third person, depending on whether you are writing from your point of view or that of someone else. For your activity, I would like you to think about what you did yesterday and write a diary about it.
It will need to be in:
Past tense
First person - using I and me.
Time order - using adverbials such as then and firstly.
You can also include:
Fronted adverbials.
Expanded noun phrases.
Interesting vocabulary.
Inverted commas.
Conjunctions
Try to make it as exciting as you can and I look forward to reading them.
Friday 12th March:
Spelling - Today we will be reviewing some of the statutory words we have learnt so far this term. I would like you to include these words in silly sentences. The sillier the better! I want you to try and make me laugh. The words I would like you to use are:

Can I proof read and edit my work?
Today, I would like you to read through your recount from yesterday and edit it using a different coloured pen or pencil. When we edit something, we look to correct any mistakes we may have made, including spelling and punctuation, and try to improve it by changing some of the language or sentence types you have used. Once you have edited your original, I would like you to write the final copy up in your neatest handwriting. Think about your letters and how they are formed. I have included a copy of a handwriting formation sheet to help remind you.
