Year 2 English Home Learning 25.01.2021 - 29.01.2021

Hello to my wonderful Year 2 class,

It has been great to speak to so many of you this week on the phone. I have loved hearing about all of the fantastic work you have been doing and it was great that you were all so excited about your learning. It has has also been brilliant to get so many emails with your lovely work on them! I can see that you are all working so hard and that makes me incredibly proud. Keep up the hard work and I look forward to seeing you all on our zoom call on Tuesday 26th January at 11.15am (details about what is needed for this can be found on Tuesday’s maths lesson). Keep smiling and being amazing!

Below is your English learning for this week. Have a go at each lesson and remember to send photos of your work to me using my email address on the class page. I will be expecting at least one email from you per week so that I can see your amazing work.

Please remember that any worksheets do not need to be printed, they are there to support and guide you and you can have a go at these activities on a piece of paper at home.

Reading

Today I would like you to try a 60-second read. Below are a selection of texts, choose one that you are able to read independently with little support.

How much can you read in 60 seconds (1 minute)? When you have read through once, repeat a few times. Remember, we are not trying to race through our reading too quickly, we want to keep to a good pace as though we are reading to an audience.

We will answer the questions that go with your chosen text tomorrow.

Text 1 - At the Top of the Hill

Text 2 - Fish and Chips

Text 3 - Home Alone

Text 4 - The History of the Yoyo

English

Starter: Write the alphabet in lower-case and upper-case letters, trying hard to form your letters correctly. Use this visual guide to help.

Let us begin by reading our new story ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London. Watch the video below.

Now we are going to think about what we have read together. You can choose to talk about the story with a member of your family, using the question prompts below, or you may write your answers.

  • What happens at the beginning?

  • What is the main event of this story?

  • How does the story end?

Tuesday

Phonics

1. Practice reading and spelling this week’s common words

gave may still found say soon night

2. I have written below some root words that have then had the suffix added. I need you to think back to the suffix rules for adding -ed and -er and write your own set of rules for adding -est to a word to create superlative adjectives. Remember to look at all of the words and write down all of the rules you will need.

tall -> tallest short -> shortest nice -> nicest big -> biggest pretty ->prettiest fat -> fattest scary -> scariest

3. Have a go at this word sort game - for each of the words that you sort, write down the root word.

Reading

Following on from yesterday’s reading session, we are going to answer the questions on your chosen text. Begin by reading through the text again. Next read each question and write your answer down. Please send your written answers to Mrs Claxton or Miss Hughes.

Reading

For today’s reading session, I would like you to read 'Vlad and the Great Fire of London’. Use the video from Monday’s lesson and read along. After re-reading our story, try retelling it using the story map you created yesterday. Talk through the events of the story using the pictures and words on your map.

English

We are going to begin today’s lesson by recapping on the story read yesterday. Watch the video from yesterday’s lesson and read along.

The main characters in our story are Vlad the flea and Boxton the rat. Today, we are going to think about their journey through the story, creating a story-map of the key events. Can you remember the story maps we have created in the classroom? We are going to do the same for Vlad and the Great Fire of London, using words and pictures. Here are some examples below:

magic porridge.PNG

Use words and pictures to show what happens to Vlad and Boxton throughout the story. Remember that when we are creating story maps, our drawings are kept very simple with little detail, the important thing is that we include the key events and order them as they happen in the story.

I look forward to seeing your story maps!

Thursday

Phonics

1. Practice reading and spelling this week’s common words

gave may still found say soon night

2. Have a look at the emotions below. With someone at home, make faces to show the different emotions. Decided who made the best face to show the emotion you have picked and write a sentence to show this. e.g. Mummy had the happiest smile.

Emotions:

happy grumpy angry hungry lonely sad

3. Choose 5 more of the superlative adjectives you created yesterday and write a sentence for each.

Reading

For your ten minute reading activity today, I would like you to use your story map to retell the story ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’. Use your words and pictures to help and try to include some detail. You can re-watch the video and read along if you would prefer.

English

Today, we are going to think about Boxton the rat. What do we already know about him? We know that Boxton is brilliant at finding the tastiest rubbish to feast on! We also know that his best friend is Vlad the flea. Let’s imagine we were to meet Boxton. What would we like to ask him? What else would we like to know? I would like to find out what he was feeling as he scampered along those cobbled streets away from the burning flames. I would ask him to describe what he saw when he escaped from the bakery.

We are going to write some questions to ask Boxton using the question starters below. Say your question sentence three times before beginning to write. Begin with a capital letter and end with a question mark. Remember that question sentences do not end with a full-stop, they end with a question mark. Here are some examples:

What did you see when you woke up in the bakery?

How did you feel when you ran through streets?

What were you thinking as you reached the river?

Try using some of our question starters.

  • What

  • Where

  • When

  • Who

  • Why

  • How

Now that you have written your questions, start thinking about what the answers could be. Keep your questions safe as we will be returning to them in tomorrow’s lesson.

Friday

Phonics

1. Practice reading and spelling this week’s common words

gave may still found say soon night

2. Create your own superhero and use superlative adjectives to describe them, e.g. Superman has the silkiest cape. Wonder Woman has the tightest leggings.

3. I have listed a few words below – some have the -est suffix and some are just words ending in ‘est’. Can you sort them into 2 columns? Remember for it to have a suffix it must be a word on its own once the suffix is removed.

rest happiest quest longest hardest unrest sharpest warmest best chest brightest nest

Reading

For your ten minute reading time today, I would like you to select a book of your choice. Why have you chosen this book? Enjoy the time to share this book with a member of your family sharing your thoughts as you read.

English

Today, you will need your questions for Boxton the rat that you wrote yesterday. Read through your questions. Did you remember to end them with a question mark?

We are going to think about possible answers to these questions. We are going to use what we know from reading the story, we could call this information clues from the story, and what we already know ourselves, perhaps from our own experiences and from other things that we have read.

Let’s take the question What did you see when you woke in the bakery? Firstly, I could go back to the story and look for some clues. Look at the text below.

thurs english.PNG

The text says that the flames were burning brightly and that the fire was blazing up the wall. I can use this information to help me write an answer to the question. Here is my answer:

When I opened my eyes, I could see bright, burning flames. The fire was spreading through the bakery, up the walls and across the floor.

Now try doing the same to write answers to some of your questions. Use the story to help you. I look forward to seeing your wonderful work.
