Nursery Home Learning- 1st February to 5th February 2021

Hello to all of our Little Winners and Little Stars!

We hope that you enjoyed being out in the snow last week. Can you remember how it felt? Did you build a snowman or make snow angels? Thank you to all those who sent in photos. We loved looking at them and sharing them with your friends.

This week we are going to be singing nursery rhymes all about Space. We have added lots of ideas of what we are doing in school and things that you could do at home.

5 Little Men in a Flying Saucer

  • Make 5 Little men (or women)- Use salt dough, junk materials or paper to create your own set of 5 little men. Decorate them with paint or stick on paper. Use them to access some of the other activities.

  • Learn to use a torch-Choose one room in your house, turn of the lights and explore the room using a torch. What can you see? Does it look different in the torch light? Can you see a shadow? Use your hands to make shadows on one of the walls.

  • Go to the moon- Use an old sheet and a torch to pretend to go to the moon. What can you see from the moon?

  • Investigate gravity- Encourage your child to jump as high as they can. What happens after they jump up? Why do they come back down? It is gravity that pull us down. Take your child outside to an open space such as a park or a garden. Show your child how to throw a ball up into the air. Talk about it always coming down. What would happen if we didn’t have gravity? Everything would float around. Imagine with your child that there was no gravity.

  • Make some stars- Use this template or make your own stars. You could colour them in with pencils or crayons, paint them or cover them with tin foil. Can you hang them from the ceiling or a doorway?

  • Make a rocket – Use a kitchen roll tube to create your own rocket! Decorate it with paper or paint. When it is dry, can you use it in your play? Which planet will you go to? Who will you see there?

  • Make a spaceship- Use a plastic bowl or paper plate to make a spaceship or flying saucer. If you can find a large enough box, why not make a spaceship that you can sit inside?

Hey Diddle Diddle

  • Learn the nursery rhyme Hey diddle diddle. Does it make sense? Can a cat really play the fiddle? Can a cow jump over a moon? Can you make up your own rhyme? You could start with Hey diddle diddle, the fish went to Lidl…

  • Can you jump over the moon?- Can you jump 1,2 3, 4 ,5 times can you clap 1,2,3,4,5 times etc. How high can you jump?

  • Chalk numbers- If you have some chalk, ask a grown-up to draw numbers 1-5 on the floor. Say a number, stand on that number and jump that many times.

  • Pegs and washing line – Pegs are great for developing strength in children’s fingers and prepare them ready to write and complete other fine motor activities such as using a knife and fork or doing up your own zip. Encourage children to use pegs to peg washing on a line, or find other materials to attach the peg to.

  • Phonics

Both classes can watch these videos. Can the children start to hear rhymes? When singing nursery rhymes, talk about the words that rhyme. Can you change the rhyming words to make new rhymes? Can you find pairs of objects in your house that rhyme? For example, pot and dot, hat and cat or egg and peg.

Maths

This week in maths we will be looking at shapes. Watch the videos below and have a go at the following activities.

  • Go on a shape hunt- Chose a room in your house or when you go out for a walk. Pick a shape that you are going to look for. It could be a circle, square, triangle or rectangle. How many can you find?

  • Potato shapes- Get a potato and ask a grown-up to cut a shape onto one side. Dip the potato in paint and use it to stamp on a piece of paper.

Stay Active

Story Time

Try to include a story into your everyday routine. Read a book or you could watch one of the videos below:

Safer Internet Day

On Tuesday the 2nd February it will be Internet safety day. In these times, with children accessing the internet more than ever, it is important to reinforce internet safety from a young age. Chatting to your child about only talking online to people they know “in real life”, telling you if there is something that they see or hear that makes them feel uncomfortable and ensuring that you are monitoring what they view online, will all help to keep them safe.

5 steps to well-being

From the 1st to the 7th February, it will be Children's Mental Health Week. Looking after our mental health is important for us all. Our blog is designed with the 5 steps to well being in mind. We hope that you find them useful and use the ideas to support you and your child. Remember:

  • Take notice

  • Connect

  • Give

  • Be active

  • Keep learning

We hope that you have a good week. We love to see pictures of your learning! It is great to have something for us to talk about when we call and speak to the children, so please keep sending them to our gallery at ce.williams@win.jtmat.co.uk.

Have fun and stay safe
