Year 3 Home Learning - Week Beginning 22.06.2020 and 29.06.2020

Hello again to my fabulous Year 3 class, I hope you are all well. It has been lovely to talk to some of you on the phone over the past couple of weeks and hear about all the work you are completing. I just want to say again how incredibly proud I am of each and everyone of you. This is a very challenging time but you are all working so hard. Keep it up!

As you may be aware school is beginning to open up to more children and I am looking forward to seeing some of you again soon. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough space in school to welcome you all back currently, so for those of you that will be remaining at home please remember to send me messages through the website as I enjoy hearing about the things you have been getting up to. Thank you for your messages this week Chloe and Lillie. Chloe, I watched the SpaceX launch too. It was very exciting counting down to take off. Did you see it dock with the International Space Station? In answer to your question about the cookie dough, I did make it and it didn’t turn out very well. I am not sure what went wrong but something definitely wasn’t right. However, I am not giving up and Nancy and I are going to try again this weekend and I will keep you posted on how the second attempt goes. Lillie, thank you for asking how I am, I am very well. I am enjoying having some of you in class but it is not the same without you all here chatting to me about your weekends, hearing your excellent reading or even correcting me when I make mistakes : )

Thank you to those of you have that have sent photos into the Home Learning Showcase. It is great to see all the work you are completing at home so please continue to send them in. Ruby, it looks like you have been hard at work again this week. Your mask and flowers are fabulous and the granola and smoothie look delicious. Strawberries are my favourite fruit so I may have to try your smoothie recipe. Chloe, your Solar System is amazing! I love how you have used the egg box and the colours you managed to make are brilliant.

There is now another way for you to keep in touch with your friends and staff. Winshill Village now has its very own podcast ‘No Limits.’ You can send in your shout outs, jokes or even sing a song. To listen to the last 2 episodes and for all the information on how to send in your entries follow this link - No Limits

English:

The focus of our learning this week will be a story called ‘The Stone Trolls.’ I have included a copy for you to read yourself, as well as a link to an audio version if you wish to listen to it.

The Stone Trolls Audio

  1. The Stone Trolls

What do the words mean?

Here is a list of some of the words from the text. Can you use a dictionary to find the definitions?

  • venture

  • mischievous

  • hoard

  • wade

  • stricken

  • hefty

  • clambered

I would now like you to select 3 of these words and put them into sentences?

Reading:

Can you answer the following questions? Remember to prove your answers by finding evidence in the text that supports it.

  • Why do you think the trolls hide in their caves during daylight?

  • In the text it says ‘Below, the sea bubbled and foamed.’ What does this phrase suggest about the sea?

  • How do you know Landra did not really want to go and rescue the ship to beginning with?

  • Can you find words in the passage below that suggests there was danger ahead?

One stormy night, two mischievous trolls called Skess and Landra perched together on the craggy cliff, watching. Below, the sea bubbled and foamed. Above, the full moon glared down, casting a long shadow across the ebony beach. In the distance, they could hear the low rumble of the other trolls, feasting on their hoard of freshly caught fish.

  • Why do you think the trolls shielded their eyes when the sun began to appear?

Grammar:

Look at the pictures below. Can you write a list of nouns that you can see in them? Remember a noun is the name of something e.g. table/chair. Can you now think of adjectives to describe them? Remember to think of colour and size and to use your senses to help. I have given you an example to start you off.

Noun: Adjectives:

rocks grey, tall, craggy, sharp, rounded

clouds white, wispy, thin, soft, fluffy

Can you now make use these adjectives and nouns to create expanded noun phrases to describe the pictures?

Writing:

This week I would like you to rewrite the story of The Rock Trolls changing some of the events that occur. In the story it tells us where the rocks on the beach came from but their are other things on the land that you could pretend were once trolls e.g. volcanoes, caves, waterfalls or the tallest rock on the cliff.

Think about what the troll may have been doing at the time he turned into stone. Was he trying to save people from walking too close to the cliff edge? Was he trying to save someone swimming in the river and the waterfall is his tears?

Think about what might cause the troll to turn to stone e.g. getting wet.

Remember you do not need to change everything and you could draw a story map to help you. I have included an example plan to give you some ideas.

  • Stone Trolls Plan

    Remember to include:

  • Interesting vocabulary

  • Speech

  • Different punctuation

  • Expanded noun phrases

  • Conjunctions

  • Fronted Adverbials

  • Past tense

I look forward to reading your finished stories.

Maths:

This week we will be multiplying and dividing 2 or 3 digit and 1 digit numbers.

Here is a short video to remind you of some of the ways you can multiply a two digit by a single digit number. Remember you can also use the column method too - here is a guide to remind you how to do this - column method.

Now complete these calculations:

93x8= 6x53= 38x3= 25x4= 5x80= 63x7= 96x6=

Can you now solve these division problems?

1) A book costs £5. Pam has £70. How many books can she buy/

2) What is 60 shared by 4?

3) Jack has 36kg of sand. He splits it into 3 pile. How much does each pile weigh?

4) Sarah has 96 oranges. She puts them into boxes with 8 oranges in each box. How many boxes does she have?

5) If Yasmin shares 56 sweets between 7 children, how many sweets will each child get?

Here is a link to fun maths game for you to try.

Topic:

Art:

To continue with our theme of trolls, I would like you to design your own rock troll. Think about the shape and colour of the rocks you will use. How tall or wide will it be. Remember you can be as creative as you wish.

DT:

Can you build a rock troll using either natural materials or junk modelling (boxes/yoghurt pots etc). I look forward to seeing some of your creations on the Home Learning Showcase.

Remember these activities are just suggestions and you do not have to complete them all.

Please continue to send your messages, upload your photos to the Home Learning Showcase and send your shout outs etc to No Limits.

I miss you all very much. Take care Year 3.
