Year One Home Learning - Week Beginning 18-5-2020 - Dragons Part 2

Hello everyone!

Well, what a week! I hope that you have all been enjoying the beginning of our work on Dragons! It’s been lovely seeing some of your work on the website and listening to the plans that you have during some weekly phone calls. There has been lots of fantastic photos uploaded to the website this week. Lyla has been very busy with Dragons, VE day and Maths, Emelie made a fantastic Lego castle and Ophelia has been writing about Dragons. I’m sure many of you have been completing work at home too and i look forward to hearing all about it!

This week we will continue our work on Dragons. Use what you have learnt already or look at some other ideas to help you.

English

Start by reading your work from last week, if you can. What words did you find? What did they mean? How did your dragon look? What was it like?

  • Plan a story about a dragon. Use this story mountain template to help you, or draw you own. Start by thinking about where the story will be set. Think about what characters will be in your story. What will happen in your story? What is the problem and how will it be solved? Remember, this is a plan so don’t worry about writing in full sentences at this point. Tell your story to your family. You may choose to act it out.

  • Write you story. Write in full sentences with capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and check that it makes sense. Use your phonics skills to help you to spell words and don’t forget to spell the Year One common exception words correctly. Start sentences with different sentence starters and use “and” or “because” in some of your sentences. When you have finished it, read it aloud to an adult. Are there any changes that you would like to make? Make them now.

  • Fold paper into a booklet and write your story. Try to do this in your neatest handwriting keeping your letters small. Illustrate the front cover and write the title of the book clearly. You can choose whether you want to put illustrations throughout the book too. Remember to write the author’s name on the front cover too. You are the author!

  • When you have finished your book, read it aloud to your family. I can’t wait to hear all about them!

Phonics

Please continue to practise your phonics skills, through phonics videos, games or by reading regularly. Here is the link to the Letters and Sounds for Home and School videos. Continue to watch these or try some of the phonics activities below. Either is fine as long as you are continuing to use your phonics skills to help improve your reading. Alternatively, you could use these short videos to help you. Phase 5- Split digraphs, Phase 5- Vowel digraphs-ay, ou, ie, ea- , Phase 5- Vowel digraphs- oi, ir, ue, aw

  • Play Dragon’s Den. You are practising all of the Phase 5 phonemes. Read the real words and the alien words. This will help you to read unfamiliar words that you come across in books.

  • Play Forest Phonics- Press on the snail and segment the word that you hear. Use the phonemes at the bottom to write each word, then check your answer.

  • Play Poop Deck Pirates- An alternative to Buried Treasure, read the words and decide if they are real or nonsense words.

Maths

This week I would like you to focus on ”comparing number sentences”. You can watch videos to help you at BBCBitewise. There area also activities here for you to complete. I have also added some extra activities for you too.

  • Comparing Number Sentences Activity cards. You do not need to print these off. You can check your answers here.

  • There are also some greater than and less than activities for you to try here. The answers are at the end!

Topic

It was lovely to see some of the Dragons that some of you made last week. There’s still time to make one if you haven’t done so already. Otherwise, here are some activities that you could complete this week.

  • Imagine that you are getting a new pet dragon. Think about what you will need to look after it. What will it sleep on? What will it eat? Make a list of all the things that you would need. You could even make it a bed and collar!

  • Make biscuits. With an adult, find a recipe to make biscuits using ingredients that you have in your house. You can find different recipes at BBCGoodFood or use your own recipe.

  • Build your very own dragon puppet show. What will the puppets say to each other? Can you act out the story that you have written?

Don’t forget that you can always send me a message via the website. I’d love to hear from you! Keep adding to the Home Learning Showcase.

You are all brilliant!

Mrs Williams
