Year 3 Home Learning - Week Beginning 18.05.2020

Hello again to my awesome Year 3 class. It seems so long ago since I last saw you all but I have loved speaking to some of you on the phone this week. Ethan, your experiment with the whiteboard pen sounded interesting, I am looking forward to seeing some photos. Kacey, it sounds like you have been doing lots of fun things with Mum whilst at home and the book you have been reading sounds exciting. Scarlett, our little chat brightened up my morning and it was lovely to hear about the things you have been doing at home including the games you have been playing.

Chloe, thank you for your message. I am not sure about potato scones if they taste a bit salty. I think I will stick to plain scones with jam and clotted cream. The cookie dough sounds good though. Would you please send me the recipe as Nancy loves it. I’ve never tried to make my own but would love to try. Remember to keep sending your photos into the Home Learning Showcase and sending me your messages as they are really brightening my days.

Gallery:

Ruby, it looked like you had a great time celebrating VE Day and your cakes looked delicious. Autumn, the rainbow you and Kaden made was amazing. You know how much I love a science experiment. When we are able to run after school clubs again I need to think about restarting science club and maybe we could begin with this. Scarlett, it is clear you are working hard at home and your sound collector work was excellent. I must say I am very impressed with your Tudor crown. The detail in it is fabulous and I love the colours you have chosen for the jewels. I think it would suit me, what do you think? ; ) Please keep sharing your photos on the Home Learning Showcase, I thoroughly enjoy looking at what you are getting up to and remember you could be appearing in next weeks gallery.

English:

Reading: This week I would like you to write a review of a book you have read during lockdown. You must include:

  • Title and author.

  • Plot - remember to include the main events.

  • Your opinion - did you enjoy this book or not. Remember to give reasons to support your answer.

  • Would you recommend it to other people and what age range would it be suitable for.

I have included a template if you wish to use it.

  1. Book Review

Writing:

This week I would like you to look at the pictures below and write descriptions about them. You will need to include:

  • Expanded noun phrases - using adjectives to describe any nouns you use.

  • Prepositions - think about where things are located in the picture.

  • Fronted adverbials - these describe when or where something is happening or how something is being done and are always followed by a comma. Here are some examples - Above the dark clouds,

    - Before breakfast,

    - Earlier today,

I have also include a short video to help remind you - Fronted Adverbials

  • Interesting vocabulary - remember to use alternative words for big, little, happy and sad. You may want to use a thesaurus to help you, they also have these online for children.

  • Conjunctions.

  • Different types of punctuation.

Spelling:

This week we will be revisiting the suffix ous. Adding ous usually changes a noun into an adjective e.g. danger + ous = dangerous.

Can you add the ‘ous’ suffix onto these words and find the meanings.

Remember if the word ends in e, we need to take it off before adding ous e.g. adventure + ous = adventurous.

If the words already ends in ous, we change it to or and then add ous e.g. glamour + ous = glamorous.

If the word ends in y, you replace it with an i e.g. fury + ous = furious

fame vary odour ridicule glory nerve poison mountain

Maths:

This week we will focusing on perimeter. Remember the perimeter of a 2D shape is the distance around the outside of the shape. We work this out by adding together the length of each of the sides.

Here is an example:

perimeter-rectangle.gif

To find the perimeter we would complete the following calculation: 7cm+7cm+3cm+3cm=20cm

I would like you to find the perimeters of these shapes. Remember to show your working out.

Now try to solve these problems. You do not need to print the sheet out, just number the questions and show your working.

Challenges:

Here are links to 3 NRich maths problems for you to have a go at completing.

Twice as Big - can you fit the smaller shapes into the larger one? This is an interactive puzzle.

The Time Is… - can you put these times into the correct order?

Super Shapes - Can you work out the value of the red shape in each of these puzzles.

Topic:

This week we will be finding out about the Spanish Armada.

The Spanish Armada was a Spanish Naval Fleet that attempted to attack Britain during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

I would like you to research the Spanish Armada and produce a fact file. Remember to plan it out first. Here is an example to help with structuring yours.

Art:

Imagine you are the Captain of a ship during the Spanish Armada. I would like you to design your own flag. You can use any shape, it does not have to be rectangular. Try to include something that is important to you e.g. family, friends, pets etc. The choice is yours. You may want to include the Union Jack flag somewhere within your design. I look forward to seeing your finished flags.

Well Being:

This week I would like you and a family member to think of 10 positive things about your and write them down. This could include your personality e.g. kind or things you are good at e.g. drawing. I then want you to share what you have written and explain why you made these choices. You could then repeat this for a family member.

Please remember these are suggestions and there is no expectation for you to complete all of the activities. You are all doing an amazing job in very difficult circumstances.
