Year 4 Home Learning - week beginning 20-04-20
Hi Year 4!
I hope you have all had a ‘cracking’ Easter enjoying the sunshine and spending time with your families.
It has been lovely to hear from so many of you and a big thank you to Matthew, Noah, Chloe and Kayla for your messages over Easter. We miss you all very much and can’t wait to see all of your smiling faces again soon. If you would like to send me a message to say hello or tell me what you have been up to, I would love to hear from you. You can send me a message by clicking here - send Miss Whitley a message.
I have also been super impressed by all of the fantastic photos that have been uploaded onto our Home Learning Showcase! It is great to see you all keeping busy and working so hard.
I can see that lots of you have been getting creative and enjoying a range of arts and crafts projects! Evelyn, your hand print keepsake cast was a lovely idea - I bet you enjoyed making those - and Darcey your super hero Iron Man picture to give support to our NHS is brill - you can really tell that you have taken time and care with your drawing. I loved your pirate ship too! It looks like you had a lot of fun - I hope nobody had to walk the plank!?! Cain and Jacob, your rainbow wall is very eye-catching and Piran what a super idea to use your old stickers to make your rainbow - wow! Alaina, your cartoon drawings are great (very professional) and I am glad to see you enjoying some reading too! Kayla, your fairy garden is very pretty and creative - I can’t wait to see it when all of the grass seeds have grown!
There has also been plenty of baking going on! Oscar, your Easter biscuits looked yummy and so beautifully decorated. Gabriella your lemon cake with lemon butter cream looked divine (I might have to pinch the recipe for this one) and Jessica I do love a corn flake cake - especially with MINI EGGS - yum yum!
I am glad to see some of your fantastic writing as well! Noah, you have definitely persuaded me to go to Egypt for my next holiday - I think it was all of those bossy words and the pictures of snorkeling that did it. Travis your diary entry looks fab with lots of lovely detail and Koree what a great start to your Mars poster - very interesting! Jacob, I thought that your explanation about Easter Eggs was very well written and beautifully presented - well done - and Matthew I love your time capsule booklet - I wonder where you are going to bury it?
Below are your home learning activities for this coming week and you will be excited to hear that we have a NEW TOPIC to explore! Our new topic is ………………. THE TUDORS!
Please remember that there is no obligation to complete these learning tasks, they are optional. However if you would like some extra learning activities to keep your brain active or something a bit different to do BBC Bitesize are posting daily home learning tasks for children, the link to these can be found on the home page of the website
Reading:
This is an information text all about the Tudors. Read the text to find out who they were and what life was like during the Tudor times. There are three different copies of the text (some with more information than others) and three different sets of questions to answer - so make sure you choose your challenge carefully!
Writing:
For English this week I would like you to write a mini-biography/fact file about Henry VIII! He was a very famous Tudor king who had a very interesting life and did lots of shocking things like having 6 different wives! So you will need to research him first to gather all of the facts. Below I have included a presentation all about him and some websites that could help with your research too. You can present your writing how ever you like but remember, these features are really important:
Headings and sub-headings
Themed paragraphs
Key events in chronological order
Facts and figures (dates)
Past tense
Variety of third person pronouns - he, him, King Henry, the King
Resources: Henry VIII information sheet, Henry VIII information presentation, fact file template, Henry VIII facts for kids
Maths:
For maths this week we will be continuing our work on fractions and decimals following the White Rose Maths Hub home learning lessons. Use the videos to help you complete the daily learning activities but don’t forget to warm up your brain first by completing the Flashback challenge at the start of each video! To complete the lesson activity you can either download and print the challenge sheet or you can simply use a piece of paper to write down the answers before using the ‘Get the answers’ link to check your work.
You can also use MyMiniMaths to practice your arithmetic. This week try number 35 - compare decimals with the same number of decimal places. Can you complete the challenge for each day of the week?
Topic:
For topic this week I would like you to use your designing skills. The Tudors used special designs to represent their family called a coat of arms. They were unique designs that were often painted onto shields, stitched into clothing and even used to decorate Tudor houses. Each symbol on the coat of arms would show something that was special to that family and these were often passed down through the generations. I would like you to design your own coat of arms for your family! You could even turn your design into a shield if you are feeling really crafty! I have included an information presentation that will help you to think carefully about the symbols and colours you are choosing and there is a design template sheet that you can print off at home if you wish. Don’t forget to label your designs to tell us what each symbol represents for your family.

Happy home learning!
