Nursery Home Learning- Week Beginning 20.04.20
A big welcome to the summer term!
Hello Little Winners and Little Stars. We hope you had a wonderful Easter and you had the chance to enjoy the beautiful weather. All of the teachers would like to let the children know that we are missing them all very much. Remember if you would like to send a message to Little Winners teachers or Little Stars teachers, feel free to do so via the stay in touch section on the nursery home page. Or if you have a drawing or a photograph of what you have been up to, feel free to send it via the Home Learning Showcase.
We would like to thank Isabelle, Lyra, Cameron and Rex from Little Stars for sending in your drawings and photos.
Little Winners
Literacy
Children in LW have been concentrating on Phase 1 Phonics. Here is an activity to reinforce the skills they have already been introduced to. Click here- Sound Starters Activity: Click on a bubble at random to hear different sound effects. Ask your child to attempt to imitate the sound with their voice. Ask your child to try to describe the sound. Gradually introduce new words for describing sounds eg. loud, quiet, slow, fast, long, short, fierce, rough, squeaky, smooth, bumpy, high, low, wobbly. It can help children to become familiar with these words if you accompany them with actions and/or pictures (e.g. squeaky - use fingers to make mouse whiskers; wobbly - shake all over like jelly). You may want to begin by giving your child a choice of words - was that sound loud or quiet/rough or smooth etc.
Mathematics
Little Winners please could you take a look at Getting started and Number recognition. Can you incorporate any of these activities into your daily routine?
Potty training information and tips
Through the phone calls home over the Easter holidays, it was brought to our attention that some parents are interested in starting to potty train their child. Here is a link which should help you get started on your journey, good luck! How to potty train NHS

Literacy
Can I bring your attention to the Nursery’s home page. We have added some additional links to the EYFS areas of learning. In the literacy section, we have added links to the phonic schemes we follow at Winshill Village. Jolly Phonics and Letters and Sounds. These links will help support phonics learning at home.
Children in LS have been introduced to Phase 2 Set 1 Letters and Words. In Set 1, the first four letters are introduced and seven words can be used for segmenting and blending (high frequency words are shown in italics): s, a, t, p: at, a, sat, pat, tap, sap, as.
Have a go at playing I-Spy with your child, using s,a,t,p. Remember to use the sound of the letter not the name of the letter. To make this activity more accessible collect a few items beginning with the same sound so your child can choose an object they can see.
Try going on a letter hunt around your home. What letters can you see? Can you say the letter sound? The kitchen cupboards would be a good place to start!
Concentrating on just the letters s,a,t,p. Can your child think of any names of family, friends or pets that have these letter sounds in their names? Maybe an adult can help them write a list.
Can your child practise writing s,a,t,p in the air with their finger? How about on each others back. Who can guess the letter correctly?
Phonics Pop Phonics Pop is a mobile friendly bubble pop game. Choose set 1 of sounds to practice. Then listen to the target sound and pop as many as you can.
Don’t forget about this song we have already shared with you. Enjoy watching your child sing along and complete the actions.
Mathematics
Little Stars have been learning numbers 1-10. I know is it tempting to push your children into learning number beyond 10, this is not necessary just yet. Remember less is more, mastery learning is all about quality, not quantity.
The children love this video at school, let them show you the actions.
Encourage your child to practise writing numerals in salt, flour, sand etc.
Take out all of the cards 2-10 and allow your child to match them together.
Here is a fun little idea to help your child practice numbers, especially if your little ones love cars.
Use pasta or similar items to count to 10.
Practice number matching with paper cups.
Physical Development
Physical activities helps in the development of better motor skills and in concentration and thinking skills. It helps build a healthier body composition, stronger bones and muscles. It also improves the child's cardiovascular fitness. Most of all it’s fun! Here are some more website to keep your little ones active.
Boogie Beebies Videos that get younger children up and dancing with CBeebies presenters.
Shakeup 10-minute activities based on Disney films that count towards a child’s 60 active minutes per day.
