Year 4 English Home Learning 01.02.2021 - 05.02.2021
Good morning to my fabulous Year 4 class. I am missing you all very much so it was lovely to see so many of you on our zoom call last week. Thank you for all the photos you are sending in of your work, they are amazing and I am incredibly proud of how hard you are working during this difficult time. Keep it up. Remember to keep checking the Year 4 Learning Gallery to see if your photos have been added.
Independent Reading Challenge:
Last week I asked you all to try and include some reading into your day and I would like you to try to do this every week . Once you have completed a book, I would love to hear all about it. I would like you to write a book review, which I can share on the Learning Gallery, telling me all about the book you have read. I want to see if you can persuade me and your classmates to read it. I have included a template for you to use if you wish.
Monday 1st February.
Spelling: Our spelling focus for this week is the word ending sure.
Words that sound like they end in ‘ze’ for example measure, are spelt using the ending sure. Can you think of a list of words that have this ending and write them down in a list. Once you have written them down, I would like you to find the definition for five of them. You can use a dictionary from home or an online dictionary.
Reading: Can I retrieve information from a non-fiction text?
Our reading focus for this week will be retrieval from non-fiction text. The non-fiction texts we will be using will be about the Romans and this will also support your writing focus for this week. I have included the video on retrieval from last week for you to refer back to if needed.
Your text for this session is all about the Roman invasion of Britain. As you will see, there are no subheadings in this text so you will need to use your skimming and scanning skills to locate keywords that may help you in finding the answers to the questions. I have included a poster on skimming and scanning to help. Remember to answer the questions in full sentences, using the start of the question to help. I have included an example below to get you started.
Which year did the Romans invade Britain?
The Romans invaded Britain in 43AD. Notice how I took the final part of the question and used it (changing to the past tense) to begin my answer. Here are your questions.
1) What was the name of the Roman Emperor? 2) How many soldiers invaded Britain?
3) By which year was most of Southern Britain under Roman rule? 4) Give one reason why the Emperor Claudius decided to invade Britain?
5) After the Catuvellaunian tribe was defeated, how many more tribes surrendered to the Romans?
6) Where did the Romans first land after sailing across the Channel? 7) How did Emperor Claudius think his subjects would see him and why?
Tuesday 2nd February.
Spelling: Today, I need your help. I made a list of words that have the ending sure but whilst I was trying to upload them, the words got split into two parts. Can you match the two parts and work out what word I was trying to make?
Reading: Can I retrieve information from a non-fiction text and make simple inferences?
Today we will be combining two of the reading skills that we have been learning about over the last two weeks. We will still be using non-fiction texts (Roman invasion of Britain), however, you will be making inferences based on the text as well as retrieving information. Remember inferences is looking for clues within a text when the answer is not directly stated. I have included the previous video on inferences for you to refer back to if needed.
As in the previous lesson, you will need to use skimming and scanning to help find the answers and remember to continue to answer the questions in full sentences.
1) Look at the first paragraph, which sentence tells us that the Romans had a successful army?
2) How many years did it take for the Romans to take control of Southern Britain?
3) In your own words, why do think the other tribes surrendered to the Romans?
4) Why could the British army not defeat the Roman Army? 5) Why do you think it only took a few months to defeat the British Army?
6) How did the Romans know that Britain would be a good country to invade?
7) Why do you think Emperor Claudius chose to send Plautius to lead the invasion rather than lead it himself?
8) Can you summarise the text in your own words?
Wednesday 3rd February.
Spelling: Today you will be applying the word ending sure into our writing. I have written 6 sentences, each of which have a word missing. your job is to work out which word is missing. On previous occasions I have provided the missing words for you to choose from, however, today I would like you to work out the word yourselves. You can do this by reading the sentence and thinking about what word would make sense in the space, it is called using the context. Remember all the words will end in sure.
I can use a pencil to _________ a line. The animals were in an _____________ at the zoo. The family took part in a ________ hunt.
The teacher said it had been a ________ to work with the class. One of my favourite ______ activities is reading.
The man had his blood _______ checked.
Grammar: Can I use prepositions to express time and cause?
Today we will be focusing on prepositions. Prepositions can tell us where something is or when something is happening. I would like you to watch the Oak National Academy lesson on exploring prepositions and then complete the activity I set. You will need a pencil and paper for the lesson.
Can you find and underline/write/circle the preposition in these sentences?
Sam watched television before tea. The shop is closed until Monday. My birthday is in October. The fire alarm went off during our art lesson.
Once you have completed these, I would like you to use these prepositions of time in your own sentences.
before after until since over on
Thursday 4th February.
Spelling: Today is our final lesson on the word ending sure. I would like you to use some of the words you found on Monday and use these in sentences. In order to extend your sentences, I would like you to try to include a conjunction such as because or and. If you are not sure how a certain word can be used in a sentence, use a dictionary to find the definition and this should help.
Writing: Can I plan what I am going to write about?
This week you are going to be writing a non-chronological report about the Romans. We learnt about the structure of these last week and I provided you with subheadings that you could use. Today, I would like you to think of your own subheadings. Think about what we have found out about the Romans already. You can use the passages we have used from our reading sessions or you may want to do more research. It is up to you.
I would like to to come up with four subheadings as well as an introductory paragraph. The four subheadings can be of your choosing but remember to use ones that you already know about or will be able to find some more information on. When you have decided on your subheadings you can add them to your plan. I have included the template for you to use if you wish. Remember, as last week you only need to write keywords and phrases into your plan.
Here is a link to Kids safesearch for those of you that wish to do some more research.
Friday 5th February.
Spelling: Our lesson focus for today will be on more of our Year 3/4 statutory words. This week I would like you to find the definition for each word (write it on a separate piece of paper) and ask a grown up if they can match the correct spelling to the definition. You could repeat this later but this time you need to match the definition and word.

Challenge: For those of you that have played scrabble, you will know that each letter is worth a number of points. I would like you to work out how many points you would get for each of these words. Which word would score you the most points? Which would score you the least. Can you find any words ending in sure that would score more points? Here are the words and values for each letter. Have fun!

Writing: Can I write a non-chronological report and organise it into paragraphs?
Today you will be writing you own non-chronological report about the Romans, using your plan from yesterday. I have included a short video to remind you of the features.
I would like you to include the grammatical features we have learnt so far this year and those covered in previous years. Here is a mind map of the things that you should try to include. Those in red should be in all of your writing.
How you choose to record your report is up to you. You might like to make a poster and add pictures or drawings, you could use the computer and type it up or make a powerpoint presentation, you could write it out on paper, the choice is yours. Just remember to include all the features. I have included the checklist for you to go through to ensure you have everything in you need.
Please remember to send me a photo of your finished report so I can upload them into the Year 4 Gallery. I look forward to reading them.
