Year 2 Topic and Story time Home Learning - 22.02.2021 - 26.02.2021

Hello Year 2,

I hope you have all had a lovely half term and have enjoyed time with your families. It was so lovely to see so many of you on zoom before half term and I look forward to seeing you all on our next one which is this Tuesday (23rd February) at 1.15pm.

Below is your topic learning for this week. We are continuing to read Gangsta Granny by David Walliams so you can find the next 5 chapters under story time for each day. Have a go at each lesson and remember to send photos of your work to me using my email address on the class page. I will be expecting at least one email from you per week so that I can see your amazing work.

Please remember that any worksheets do not need to be printed, they are there to support and guide you and you can have a go at these activities on a piece of paper at home.

Design and Technology

In Design and Technology this half term we will be exploring the houses in London during 1666. We will be looking at the materials they were made of and comparing them to houses nowadays and then eventually designing and creating our own house.

Today we are going to be exploring a famous architect called Christopher Wren who was famous for helping to re-design London and more significantly, St Paul’s cathedral, after the Great Fire of London.

Key vocabulary -

architect - a person who plans, designs and oversees the construction of buildings.

architecture - the practice of designing and constructing buildings

structure - a building or other object made up of different parts.

construct - to build or make something, typically a building.

build - to construct something by putting parts or materials together.

Click here to watch the video about the job of an architect.

I would like you to complete your own research today and answer the following questions, you may find the answer to some of them on the video above.

  • What is the job of an architect?

  • What do they use to do their job? How has this changed over time?

  • When was Christopher Wren alive?

  • What was Christopher Wren most famous for?

  • Where did Christopher Wren study?

  • What happened to Christopher Wren’s original plans for the re-build of London?

  • What other famous buildings did Christopher Wren design?

I would love it if you could send me any pictures of your work to my email address that is on the class page.

  • Who started the Sikhism religion?

  • When did the religion start?

This afternoon will be our zoom meeting. It will take place at 1.15pm. We will be recapping on some work on shape as well as playing times tables bingo. You will need to create a bingo grid with 6 multiples of 10 on it (numbers that are in the 10 times table from 0x10 to 12x10). I have completed one below to help you with this. I would also like you to have a piece of work to show, like we usually do. I look forward to seeing you all there.

PE

For our PE lesson this week we are going to continue to practice moving our bodies in different ways and learning new dance routines. I would like you to have a go at the moves on the videos below.

Geography

I would like you to follow the link to BBC Bitesize and watch the video about physical and human features.

We are going to be focusing on physical features today. Remember these are things that would be here even if humans were not and are naturally formed. I would like you to have a look at the pictures below and list anything you can see that is a physical feature.

If you have time I would like you to go on a walk around your local area and identify any physical features that you see. When you get back, you could draw and label a picture with all of the physical features you saw.

Science

In our science lesson this week, we are going to learn about minibeasts. Minibeasts are animals without a backbone, known as invertebrates. All animals can be classified as invertebrates (they do not have a backbone) or a vertebrate (they do have a backbone). What do you already know about minibeasts? Can you name some minibeasts? Can you talk about their habitats?

Click on the picture to watch a video clip about minibeasts.

List three facts about minibeasts. At this point of the session, you may choose to research a minibeast of your choice. You could present your research as a fact-file, an information page or you could draw and label a picture. You may choose to build a minibeast using junk-modelling or construction materials such as lego. Write or record some facts to go with your model. You could choose to create a presentation, this could be a video of you talking about your chosen minibeast or perhaps an electronic presentation using a programme such as PowerPoint. We look forward to seeing your work.

Here are some resources that may help you

PSHE

This half term in PSHE we will be completing a unit on fairness.

I would like you to have a think about the words fair and unfair. I want you to think about what these words mean.
I am going to give all of the children with blue eyes an extra playtime. Is this fair? Why?

I would like you to now look at the statements on page 2 of this document and sort them into things that are fair and things that are unfair.

For your final activity I need you to define the word ‘unfair’ and then write about a time where you thought something wasn’t fair.
