Year 2 English Home Learning - 01.03.2021 - 05.03.2021

Hello Year 2,

I am so excited to have you all back in school next week. Please continue to work hard at home this week so you are ready to carry on your learning once we are back in school. This week will be our final zoom call and it will take place at 11.15am on Thursday.

Please remember that any worksheets do not need to be printed, they are there to support and guide you and you can have a go at these activities on a piece of paper at home.

This week in our English lessons, we will build upon our learning from last week, using instructional language in our retelling and in our writing. We will be working towards writing our own instruction text about caring for our environment.

On Thursday this week, it is World Book Day. Our whole day will be dedicated to celebrating reading and our love of books. Together, with the rest of the John Taylor Multi-Academy Trust (JTMAT), we will be taking part in shared activities, ideas and competitions. We will be sharing pictures of activities completed both in school and at home. Please visit the JTMAT World Book Day website. Click here to access. Be sure to send photographs of your work to your teacher so that we can share on the JTMAT website and enter the competition! Send all pictures and work to your teacher’s email address in the usual way.

On the JTMAT World Book Day website, you will be able to see staff from our school and other schools in our MAT, sharing their favourite books with you. You are able to access your World Book Day voucher here too, just click on the image below.

Monday

Phonics

1. This week’s common words are:

gone please ever miss suddenly everybody

Practice reading these and spelling them.

2. We are going to be using the -ly suffix to change an adjective into an adverb. An adverb is a word that describes a verb - how something is happening. There are some examples below. Write a sentence containing each one.

suddenly loudly safely quietly

3. Read the sentence below. Use different adverbs in replace of ‘quietly’ to change the meaning of the sentence.

Reading

Read your school reading book or an online banded book for ten minutes. Retell what you have you read to a member of your family. Try to retell events or information in the same order as the text and include some detail. Click here for online books.

English

We are going to begin our lesson by retelling our instruction text, using our text map to help. Begin by joining in with the video, using your text map and actions. Retell a couple of times and if you feel ready, try retelling the text without the video.

Now we are going to read this text and think about the structure and the way it has been written.

Here is the text:

How to take care of our beaches

Have you ever visited a beautiful beach? If so, you will know how wonderful it is to spend time there. Unfortunately, people have been leaving rubbish and unwanted things behind. This looks terrible and it is harming the natural home of many living things.

We must all take care of our beaches and protect the natural world. Please follow these instructions when you next visit a beach.

1) First, find a space on the beach to relax or play. Make sure you do not sit on any minibeasts!

2) Then, take your time to enjoy the beach. You could build a sandcastle, do some digging or go for a paddle in the sea.

3) Look for interesting shells but remember to leave them behind when you leave.

4) Take photographs of living things such as crabs or flowers. Do not touch them and do not take them home.

5) Finally, when you leave, collect your belongings and take them away with you. Make sure you do not leave any rubbish behind.

The text begins with a heading. Can you find it?

The heading is How to take care of our beaches.

The text begins with an introduction. This sets the context for our text, telling the reader about the beauty of beaches but also letting them know that we have a problem - rubbish! The introduction begins with a question sentence. This is a good way to engage the reader and get them thinking.

The author then introduces the instructions.

Read through the instructions. What do you notice?

Use your skimming and scanning skills that we practised a couple of weeks ago to find these words:

finally, first, then - what job do these words do in the sentence? Why have they been used? Let’s write these words down as they will be useful when we come to writing our own instruction text.

find, take, look collect, leave - what about these words? What job are they doing in the sentence? These words are verbs. Recap on our learning on verbs from before half-term. What are verbs? Super, they are words that describe an action, a state or an occurrence (something that is happening). I think these words will be useful in our writing. Let’s write them down.

We are going to use this structure to write our own instruction text later in the week. We will include the following:

  • Heading

  • Introduction

  • Instructions

Tuesday

Phonics

1. Practice reading and spelling this week’s common words.

gone please ever miss suddenly everybody

2. Watch the video on BBC Bitesize about adding the -ly suffix to a word. Use the rules you have learnt to add the -ly suffix to the words below.

slow quick careful silent soft angry wild rapid

3. I have listed a few words below – some have the -ly suffix and some are just words ending in ‘ly’. Can you sort them into 2 columns? Remember for it to have a suffix it must be a word on its own once the suffix has been taken away.

suddenly fly shyly badly bully early happily ugly

Reading

For our ten minutes of reading today, choose one of the following texts to read. Remember to select the text that you are able to read mostly independently. Read aloud as if you are reading to an audience. Clear voice, good pace - try to complete in 60 seconds and using our voice to make it interesting for the listener.

Text 1 - Dad’s Bag

Text 2 - The Odd Coin

Text 3 - Clean the Classroom

Text 4 - Recipe for a Health Fruit Salad

English

Starter: Sentence substitution

Write this sentence:

Do not drop litter on the ground.

Now try substituting the words with some of the words below to make new sentences. Try to make three different sentences that make sense.

throw rubbish grass pavement leave park

So yesterday, we looked at the structure of an instruction text. Let’s begin by retelling that text using our story map. Return to the video if you need to.

The text has a heading, an introduction and some instructions. We are going to plan our own instruction text over the next couple of lessons, using this structure. We are going to write a set of instructions on caring for our local environment or area.

Talk task: Share your thoughts and ideas on the following questions:

  • How can we take care of our local area? Perhaps think about your local park or woodland area.

  • What do people need to do to take care of it?

  • What do we not want people to do?

  • What would we like the park or our woodland to look like?

  • What should people do when they visit the park or the woodland?

We are going to use a box-frame to note down our ideas. We will be able to use this to help us write our own instruction text. Look at the example below, using the same structure as the text ‘How to care for our beaches’

Wednesday

Phonics

1. Practice reading and spelling this week’s common words.

gone please ever miss suddenly everybody

2. Remember an adjective is a describing word. I would like you to write a list of at least 10 adjectives. Now explore whether you can add -ly to all of the adjectives to create adverbs.

3. Use 3 of the adverbs you have created to write your own sentences.

Reading

Read the text that you read yesterday. Now try answering the questions.

Text 1 - Dad’s Bag

Text 2 - The Odd Coin

Text 3 - Clean the Classroom

Text 4 - Recipe for a Health Fruit Salad

English

Today, we are going to write the heading and introduction for our own instruction text using our planning from yesterday. Take out your work from yesterday’s lesson.

Here is my plan:

Capture1.PNG

I am going to use my plan to write. I am also going to use similar language to the text ‘How to care for our local beaches’.

Read my heading and introduction.

How to care for our local park

Have you ever visited a beautiful park? If so, you will know how fun it is to spend time there! Unfortunately, people have been leaving rubbish and unwanted things behind. This looks dreadful and it is spoiling the environment for all living things.

We must all take care of our local parks and protect the environment. Please follow these instructions when you next visit a park.

Now have a go at writing your own heading and introduction for your instruction text. Remember to send a picture of your work to Mrs Claxton and Miss Hughes so that we can see how you are getting on and give you some feedback.

Reading

Choose a book of your choice and read with a member of your family. Find somewhere comfy, cosy and quiet to read. This is a lovely way to spend ten minutes of your day. Talk about the parts that you have enjoyed reading together.

English

In our lesson today, we are going to continue writing our own instruction text. Spend a few minutes recapping on all of our learning so far. Retell the beach text using your text map and actions. Look at your boxed-up text and notes on caring for your local environment. Finally, read your writing from Wednesday’s lesson. You have already written your heading and your introduction.

We are going to write the instruction part of our text. We can use the instruction sentences from our beach text to help us. Let’s recap.

I am going to say my first instruction. I have said it three times and written it down. Here it is:

1) First, find a space in the park to sit or play. Make sure you do not sit on any flowers or plants.

Now try writing your own instructions. Aim for at least five instructions in your text.

Please send a picture of your writing to Mrs Claxton or Miss Hughes. We cannot wait to see your writing and read your text.
