Nursery Home Learning- 22nd to 26th February

Hello everybody!

We hope that you have had a lovely, relaxing half-term holiday.

Our topic this week is We’re going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen… one of our favourite books! There are so many activies that you can do from this book, both at home and at school, and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we do! So, to start us off, here is a video of Michael Rosen telling his story:

Here are some ideas designed for when you go out on a daily exercise walk or in a local park or garden:

  • Create some sensory bottles- Using clean, empty plastic bottles, add something in each one from the story. You could put water in one, grass in another, sticks, mud and cotton wool. With the lid safely on, look closely at what is in each bottle. Listen to the story and pick up the right bottle for each part of the story.

  • Make some binoculars- Using cardboard tubes (kitchen roll or wrapping paper tubes are great) stick two together to make binoculars. Encourage you child to use them to look closely at different natural objects. As they are looking at them, encourage them to talk about what they see.

  • Go on a bear hunt- Put your warm clothes on and go for a socially distanced walk, looking for bears. Talk with your child about what they can see, hear, touch and smell. This activity could also be done in your back garden. You could even take your binoculars with you!

Here are some indoor activities:

  • Create a story board- Divide a piece of paper into 6 sections. For each section, add different materials to represent a part of the story. For example, cut paper for grass, twigs for the forest or cotton wool for the snow storm.

  • Paper plate bear- Paper plates are great for making different things. This week, can you make a bear? Can you give it one shiny wet nose, two big fury ears and two goggly eyes?

  • Build a dark, gloomy cave- using any blankets or pieces of material that you may have, build a cave for the bear to live in. Can you pretend to be the bear that lives in the cave? How do you feel? How can you make it more comfortable? Who will come to visit you in your cave?

  • Cave drawings- Find some twigs and stick different leaves and flowers to the ends of them. Use them to make marks, or draw letters. You could do this outside in the mud or inside with a tray of flour, sugar or rice. Talk about the different marks that each one makes. Which one do you like best and why?

Phonics

This week, we are going to be continuing to practise our listening skills, and talking about what sounds different words begin with. This video encourages children to listen to sounds and think about what they can hear:

Watch the following videos to recap the work from before half term:

We will also be starting to think about words that start with the sounds e, u, r and hearing ck at in the middle and ends or words:

What other words can you think of that start with these sounds?

Maths

Maths is part of every day life and we would encourage you to continue to count in real-life situations. How many twigs can they collect? How many eyes does a bear have? Can they take 4 large bear steps?

This week, we will also be talking about where things are, using positional language. Again, this can be used as you complete everyday activities. Watch the videos to get you started:

Now why not play your own game of Hide the Teddy? Practise using the language next to, on top of, behind, underneath, in between, in front of, above, below, inside, and outside.

Stay Active

As always, we would continue to encourage you to stay active. It’s great for well-being and develops strength and stamina. Have a go at some of the dances below or why not go on a bear hunt?

Story time

If you would like to borrow any books, please get in touch via email or contact the school office.

We hope that you all have a good week and look forward to seeing your fantastic photos!

Stay safe and have fun!
