Year 4 Home Learning - Week beginning 18.05.20

Hello my lovely year 4s!

Welcome to another week of Home Learning. I hope that you are all staying safe and keeping busy!

A big thank you for all of your messages this week - they always make me smile. Please keep sending them in by clicking the following link - send Miss Whitley a message :) and of course keep uploading your brilliant work onto our Home Learning Showcase.

This weeks gallery:

There have been lots of fabulous photos posted from Year 4 this week and I am super proud of you all for working so hard! I am glad to see so many of you getting stuck into our Tudors topic and enjoying exploring your family trees. Noah, Chloe and Frances, they look great! I have seen some wonderful self portraits and coats of arms this week too from Piran, Oscar and Kayla and a fantastic ‘ridiculous remedy’ from Lillie to cure toothache! Well done everyone! I absolutely love to see all of your home learning creations! Jessica your magnets are brill! (very nicely decorated) I bet you had fun casting those and there have been some amazing LEGO constructions from Noah and Kayla too! Keep up the brilliant work Year 4! I wonder who will feature in our gallery next week ….

I have included your Home Learning Tasks for this week below. Please remember that these are just suggestions and there are no expectations for you to complete all of the activities.

Reading:

This week we will be continuing with our Tudor topic by starting to look at what they ate in Tudor times. For your reading challenge, I would like you to read the information in the Tudor Food Presentation and use your inference skills to answer the questions about the pictures (these are found at the end of the presentation and also below this text). You will need to write sentences to clearly explain what you think and give some evidence to prove it, just like we do when we are at school.

You could start your inference sentences with: I can infer that the people in the paintings are rich/poor. I think this because I can see …….. which means that …….

English:

For your writing challenge this week, I would like you to use what you have read and learnt about Tudor food to write a short explanation about what the Tudors ate. You could also include some of your own research. Don’t forget a main heading for your writing and sub-headings for each paragraph eg/ Local Tudor foods, Exotic Tudor foods, Rich Tudors, Poor Tudors… etc

Spelling:

Can you help me edit the sentences below by correcting the spelling mistakes?

For extra spelling practice this week, use Spelling Frame to learn your homophones - Rule 21.

Maths:

For maths this week we will be learning all about time. We will explore hours, minutes and seconds, years, months, weeks and days, converting analogue to digital (12 hour) and converting analogue to digital (24 hour). As well as giving opportunities for children to practice fluency, the activities will help them to develop reasoning and problem-solving skills too. You can use the PowerPoint Presentations below to learn how each problem is done. Then you can try it yourself using the question sheets and check your work using the answers.

Hours, minutes and seconds - presentation, questions, answers

Years, months, weeks and days - presentation, questions, answers

Analogue to digital 12 hour - presentation, questions, answers

Analogue to digital 24 hour - presentation, questions, answers

You can also use MyMiniMaths to practice your arithmetic and key maths skills. This week try number 23 - read and write analogue and digital times or number 28 - converting units of time. Can you complete the challenge for each day of the week?

Topic:

This week why not try cooking some Tudor foods yourself? You can use the Cookit website to access their special history cook book which includes lots of real Tudor recipes! The vegetable pottage looks yummy with a range of quite simple ingredients! Remember to use your maths skills to measure and weigh the ingredients accurately and make sure you follow all of the health and safety tips in the recipe. If you are feeling like a super chef you could even try more than one recipe and write a short review of each meal, comparing and describing them. If you find a good one, send me a message to recommend it and I will try it too!

Happy home learning!

Miss Whitley
