Year 6 Home Learning 06/01/21 - 15/01/21
Hello to my amazing Year 6 class. I hope you are well and keeping safe. I hope you all had an amazing Christmas and I am looking forward to hearing all about it when we can return to school. I was really looking forward to seeing you all again and hopefully it won’t be too long until I can.
We have had such a fantastic start to the school year and it is important that we continue to progress and learn throughout these strange times.
Remote learning expectations
It is expected that Primary school children will access 3 hours of remote learning every week day whilst learning at home.
New learning blogs will be uploaded every Friday.
We will be adding links and videos to support the children’s learning throughout the week so please check for updates every day.
There will be regular contact between school and the children through phone calls and zoom so that the children will be able to talk about their learning and we will be able to provide feedback.
There will be a contact button direct to the teacher to answer any questions and to send pictures of your work (which can then be placed in our Learning Gallery).
Reading Challenges
Challenge 1
I would like you to read the text ‘History Hackers: Victorian Venture’. Once you have read through the text, can you use a dictionary or dictionary.com to identify definitions for the following vocabulary.
dismissed slim belched flocked civilised
cork board plucked adrenaline rummage
Remember to read the word in context as it may have more than one definition. Identifying the word class of the vocabulary can support you with this.
If there are any other pieces of vocabulary you don’t understand within the text, make sure you also identify definitions for that vocabulary.
Once you have identified definitions for the vocabulary listed above and any other vocabulary you don’t understand the meaning of, there are some comprehension questions for you to have a go at.
Here are the answers for the comprehension questions.
Challenge 2 (Added to the blog on 06.01.21)
Can you read the following text ‘The Nation’s Hero - Captain Tom Moore ’. When reading through the text, make sure you make a note of any vocabulary you don’t understand. You check the meaning of this vocabulary using a dictionary or dictionary.com.
Once you have read through the text, have a look at these answers. These are the answers to some comprehension questions. All the answers can be located in the Captain Tom Moore text. Your second reading challenge is to tell me what the comprehension question was based on the answer.
Example:
Answer: Humphires
I think that the question could have been ‘Who wrote the Newspaper Report?’. I think this because underneath the heading it says by A Humphires, which means that he is the author of this Newspaper Report.
Remember to use evidence from the text to support your thinking.
Once you have completed this, here are the original questions so you can check if you were correct!

Happy Healthy Children Week (Added to the blog on 08.01.21)
This week, we were due to celebrate Happy Healthy Children Week. Happy Healthy Children Week is where we engage in a range of activities that focus on both our physical and mental health. The activities will include discussing our emotions, how we handle our emotions, how different situations might make us feel, how we can keep both our minds and body healthy and the importance of exercise. We have all had a tricky year, therefore it is important we support the children with how we can deal with our worries and emotions.
I have put together a powerpoint, which talks the children through the different activities I would like them to complete and gives them examples to support them with those activities. I would love to see the work you produce for Happy Healthy Children Week, you can share this with me using the contact Miss Twigger box on the Year 6 class page.
