Personal Development
Our Vision and Values
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, personal development sits at the heart of our vision: “A Place to Dream Big and Learn Without Limits.” We believe education is about far more than academic achievement. It is about developing confident, compassionate and capable young people who are ready to thrive in the 21st century and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Our Personal Development Offer ensures every child grows socially, emotionally, culturally and morally — alongside achieving academic success.
Our approach is underpinned by our Dream Big values: Discover, Respect, Effort, Aspiration, Mindfulness, Belonging, Independence and Growth. These values are lived and experienced every day through lessons, assemblies, leadership opportunities, enrichment and community engagement. They shape how we treat one another, how we approach challenges and how we prepare for the future.
Our Personal Development Intent, Implementation and Impact plan (2025–2026) outlines the breadth of experiences we provide. Through a carefully sequenced programme from Nursery to Year 6, we ensure equity of opportunity so that every child benefits from rich and meaning.
Curriculum, Leadership and Enrichment
Personal development is woven through our curriculum and daily life. Weekly Jigsaw PSHE and RSHE lessons, half-termly assemblies and national awareness events — including work with the NSPCC, Children in Need and Young Minds — help pupils develop an understanding of relationships, wellbeing, safety, equality and having a voice.
British Values are actively promoted through assemblies, Picture News and meaningful pupil leadership roles such as School Parliament, Well-being Ambassadors, Digital Leaders, Eco Team and Lunchtime Leaders. Through democratic processes and real responsibilities, children learn what it means to contribute positively to society.
Religious Education strengthens our inclusive ethos. Through the Jigsaw RE curriculum and our close links with St Mark’s Church, pupils take part in experiences such as Experience Christmas, Experience Easter, nativity performances and carol services. These opportunities encourage reflection, curiosity and respect for different beliefs and worldviews.
Beyond the classroom, our enrichment offer ensures that children explore their interests and talents through sport, the arts, residential visits and extra-curricular clubs. Our “We are…” clubs — including Explorers, Singers, Scientists, Athletes, Artists and Performers — give pupils a sense of purpose and achievement. Events such as Young Voices, Sports Festivals, swimming lessons, Bikeability, STEM Week, Art Week and residential experiences help to build resilience, teamwork and independence.
Through our Cultural Capital and Pupil Entitlement Charter, we ensure that by the time children leave Winshill Village, they have experienced adventure and challenge, explored creativity and culture, contributed to their community and developed aspirations for the future. From Forest School in EYFS to leadership roles and transition preparation in Year 6, we are committed to preparing pupils exceptionally well for the next stage of their education and for life beyond primary school.
As a proud member of the John Taylor Multi-Academy Trust, personal development at Winshill Village is not an add-on — it is embedded in everything we do. It ensures our children leave us confident in who they are, proud of what they have achieved and ready to truly Dream Big and Learn Without Limits.
