Vision

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, our vision is to nurture confident, healthy, and responsible individuals who are ready to take their place in the world. Through a whole-school approach to PSHE and RSE, we give children the knowledge, skills, and values to thrive as individuals, friends, and citizens.

Using the Jigsaw Programme, we deliver a consistent and progressive curriculum that promotes personal development, positive attitudes, and respectful relationships. Our approach helps children to understand themselves and others, make informed choices, and develop resilience, empathy, and respect.

PSHE and RSE at Winshill play a key role in safeguarding, equality, and inclusion, while promoting British Values and SMSC development. Our vision is for every child to grow as a well-rounded, compassionate, and reflective learner who contributes positively to school and society.

Aims and Goals

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, our PSHE and RSE curriculum aims to:

  • Develop confident, healthy, and responsible individuals.
  • Support personal growth, resilience, and wellbeing.
  • Foster respectful, caring, and inclusive relationships.
  • Equip children with knowledge, skills, and values to thrive.
  • Promote safeguarding, equality, SMSC, and British Values.

Through our provision our goal is to:

  • Deliver the Jigsaw Programme consistently across school.
  • Build emotional literacy, self-awareness, and resilience.
  • Enable safe, informed choices about health, wellbeing, and relationships.
  • Promote positive attitudes, equality, and respect for diversity.
  • Encourage responsibility, active citizenship, and contribution to society.

Curriculum

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, Relationships and Health Education is taught through the Jigsaw Programme as part of the PSHE curriculum. Lessons are carefully sequenced, age-appropriate and follow a consistent structure:

  • Connect Us – builds social skills and positive relationships.
  • Calm Me – supports emotional regulation and readiness to learn.
  • Tell Me / Show Me – introduces new knowledge and skills.
  • Let Me Learn – applies learning through varied activities.
  • Help Me Reflect – encourages reflection recorded in Jigsaw Journals.

Learning is reinforced through circle time, role play, discussion, problem-solving and real-life experiences such as charity work and school visitors.

In the Early Years, PSHE links directly to Personal, Social and Emotional Development, supported by Jigsaw lessons and home–school activities.

Lessons are age-appropriate, inclusive and adapted for SEND needs, with sensitivity to culture and background. When appropriate, lessons may be delivered in single-gender groups. Resources are chosen carefully, and classrooms provide safe, respectful spaces for open discussion. Sensitive topics are handled honestly and appropriately, promoting respect and reducing stigma.

Assessment

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we recognise that effective assessment is key to ensuring all pupils make strong progress in their personal, social, health and emotional development. Our comprehensive assessment framework for PSHE, built around the Jigsaw Programme, supports our school vision while maintaining a consistent and evidence-based approach.

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, teachers assess PSHE and RSE through the Jigsaw Programme using ongoing, informal methods. Progress is observed and recorded through written work, group tasks, discussions and presentations, as well as children’s contributions to Jigsaw Journals (PSHE Books). This approach ensures assessment remains meaningful, reflective and supportive of each child’s personal development.

Cross-Curricular

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, PSHE and RSE are closely linked to other areas of the curriculum, including science, British Values and financial education. In science, children learn about the human body, healthy lifestyles, life cycles and human development, which support their understanding of health and relationships. British Values are embedded from the Early Years, with children encouraged to respect differences, challenge stereotypes and value equality and diversity. Financial education, taught in maths as well as the PSHE lessons, develops children’s understanding of money from recognising coins in EYFS to budgeting and enterprise projects in Key Stage 2. Together, these cross-curricular links enrich our PSHE and RSE provision, helping children develop the knowledge, skills and values to thrive in life.

Visits and Enrichment

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, visits and enrichment activities play an important role in strengthening our PSHE and RSE curriculum. Through experiences such as workshops, charity events, themed weeks, community links, and visits from organisations like the NSPCC, fire service, and Children’s Air Ambulance, pupils learn to apply their knowledge and skills in real-life contexts. Residentials, team-building activities, cultural visits, and community projects further support children’s personal development, resilience, and respect for others, enriching the Jigsaw Programme and preparing them for life beyond school.

Pupil Voice

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we value the voices of all our pupils in shaping our PSHE and RSE provision. Regular pupil voice activities help us to understand their experiences and needs, ensuring that lessons, enrichment opportunities, and wider school initiatives remain relevant, engaging and supportive. The feedback we gather directly informs and enhances the teaching and opportunities we provide, helping us deliver the very best education for every child.
