Vision

At Winshill Village Primary & Nursery School, our vision is to build the self-confidence of our pupils as well as developing communication skills. We encourage pupils to build their curiosity of a language and promote resilience as they develop these skills. This curiosity and confidence will equip them with the skills to be able to communicate with others from around the world, making them confident communicators. They will be knowledgeable of other cultures, in their own community as well as when they travel to others. We want our children to be inquisitive about the world, open-minded and also responsible for the actions and choices they make.

Aims and Goals

At Winshill Village Primary & Nursery School, our Modern Foreign Language curriculum is designed to nurture confident, resilient, and curious communicators who are equipped to engage with the wider world. Rooted in our school vision, we aim to develop pupils’ self-belief, communication skills, and appreciation of other cultures.

Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum aims to:

  • Provide a broad and engaging language-learning experience where all pupils encounter a rich variety of linguistic skills and cultural knowledge.

  • Develop pupils’ confidence to speak French with clear intonation and accurate pronunciation, enabling them to communicate with increasing fluency.

  • Build fluency in reading and foster creativity in writing, encouraging pupils to explore the French language with imagination and independence.

  • Promote learner independence, helping pupils take ownership of their language learning and apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.

  • Support pupils in using a wide range of linguistic resources, enabling them to draw on vocabulary, grammar, and strategies to deepen their understanding.

  • Encourage spontaneous and creative use of French, helping pupils use language practically, purposefully, and confidently.

  • Inspire curiosity about the wider world, enabling pupils to appreciate different cultures, value diversity within their community and beyond, and become responsible, open-minded global citizens.

Curriculum

At Winshill Village Primary & Nursery School, Modern Foreign Languages is delivered across Key Stage 2 using the Kapow scheme of learning. From Year 3 to Year 6, pupils follow a carefully sequenced, age-appropriate programme that builds their confidence and competence in French.

Our curriculum is structured to ensure a rich and balanced language-learning experience:

  • Six engaging topics are taught each year, providing clear progression and full coverage of key language skills.

  • Each unit integrates speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, language-learning strategies, and cultural understanding to develop well-rounded linguists.

  • A variety of practical, verbal, and written activities ensure pupils can apply their learning in meaningful and enjoyable ways.

  • Lessons are supported by high-quality teacher video guidance, modelling accurate pronunciation and effective language-teaching techniques.

  • Learning is adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, ensuring every child can succeed and deepen their understanding of French.

  • Additional resources, such as French dictionaries, are used alongside the Kapow scheme to enhance learning and support pupils in becoming independent language learners.

This structured approach ensures pupils leave KS2 with a strong foundation in French and a growing curiosity about languages and cultures.

Cross-Curricular

Our MFL curriculum is enriched through meaningful connections with many other subjects. Pupils apply their learning across the curriculum—for example, using mathematical vocabulary when exploring French words for shapes, colours, numbers, and dates; drawing on their English skills to build sentences and compare French and English grammar; and applying their geographical knowledge when locating France, exploring its regions, and discussing weather patterns. Links to science deepen understanding of weather and aspects of the water cycle, while opportunities in music, such as learning about the Eurovision Song Contest, provide cultural insight and enjoyment.

These cross-curricular links enhance our MFL provision by helping pupils make connections, broaden their understanding of the world, and develop the knowledge, skills, and values they need to thrive in the future.
