Equality & Diversity

Equality Statement

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we are committed to equality and fairness for all. We value diversity and actively celebrate the differences that make our school community unique.

We are dedicated to eliminating harassment, discrimination and prejudice in all forms. This includes – but is not limited to – unfair treatment or disadvantage on the grounds of age, disability, race (including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin), sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief (or lack of belief), pregnancy and maternity, or being married or in a civil partnership.

Equality Information and Objectives

Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School is fully committed to meeting its duties under the Equality Act 2010. Our equality procedures are firmly embedded in school practice and are reviewed annually in consultation with key stakeholders – including pupils, parents, staff, and governors. This process ensures that our approach remains open, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of our community.

Through these procedures, and the values that underpin them, we guarantee that no member of our school community experiences discrimination. Instead, we actively promote fairness, respect, and equal opportunities for all.

Our Equality Objectives are:

  1. To close the gap in attainment and progress for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), disadvantaged pupils, and other vulnerable groups, enabling every child to achieve their full potential.

  2. To promote cultural development, respect, and understanding through a rich range of experiences within and beyond the curriculum.

  3. To prevent, challenge, and respond robustly to all forms of prejudice-based bullying, discrimination, and hate incidents.

The Public Sector Equality Duty

As a public body, Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School has a legal responsibility to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED). This duty requires us to have due regard to the need to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, and victimisation.

  • Advance equality of opportunity for all.

  • Foster good relations between people of different backgrounds and groups.

The PSED is central to our work because it ensures that our decision-making is transparent, accountable, and rooted in fairness. It requires us to consider carefully how our policies, practices, and day-to-day activities affect individuals and groups with different needs, so that every member of our school community is supported to thrive.

Equality Act 2010

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we believe that all pupils, staff, parents, and members of our community have equal rights and deserve to be treated with respect and fairness, regardless of any differences. We are fully committed to meeting our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 and to upholding its three core aims:

  • Eliminate discrimination, harassment, and other conduct prohibited by the Act.

  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

  • Foster good relations across all groups, building mutual respect and understanding.

Throughout the school year, pupils take part in assemblies and learning opportunities that promote equality and celebrate diversity. These include themes linked to race, religion, gender, class, sexuality, and ability/disability. Many of these important issues are also explored through our curriculum in subjects such as English, History, RE, Science, and PSHE.

Our aim is to encourage discussion, raise awareness, and deepen appreciation of differences so that our pupils grow into respectful, inclusive, and responsible members of society. By educating our children and engaging with parents, we seek to strengthen community relations and break down barriers of fear or ignorance that can lead to discrimination.

In addition, all staff receive training on equality, diversity, inclusion, and community cohesion as part of their professional development, ensuring that these principles are embedded in everyday practice across the school.

Equality and the Curriculum

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, our curriculum is designed to reflect the values of respect, inclusion, and equality. It promotes positive attitudes and recognises the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs that make up our school and wider community.

For example, in Religious Education, pupils learn about a wide range of faiths and traditions, such as the significance of Diwali for Hindus and Vaisakhi for Sikhs. Across the year, we also celebrate important events and festivals including Eid, Diwali, Chinese New Year, Christmas, Easter, and Harvest through assemblies, learning activities, and whole-school events.

Our curriculum is regularly reviewed to ensure that it remains inclusive, representative, and responsive to the needs of our pupils. By embedding equality and diversity throughout subjects and school life, we prepare children to value difference, challenge prejudice, and contribute positively to society.
