Curriculum Statement
Curriculum Vision
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, our vision is to provide children with an ambitious and stimulating curriculum that offers a broad, rich, balanced and progressive education. We aim to ensure that we provide opportunities for all children to aspire and achieve through high quality provision. Our curriculum is well planned to ensure that children have the opportunity to be curious and creative thinkers, who can reflect upon their own learning. We pride ourselves on creating a setting which promotes children’s happiness, well-being and confidence and where children can learn and flourish.
Our child focused approach ensures that pupils are exposed to purposeful, enriching experiences that allow them to build determination to achieve academic success. We also place great emphasis on exposing children to opportunities beyond the academics to prepare them for later life. Physical development, well-being and mental health are prioritised, and we use a restorative approach for all children alongside targeted ELSA support for individual children. We believe in developing pupils understanding of British values and celebrate our unique and diverse community.
Our Curriculum Rationale
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we believe every child deserves a rich, ambitious and inspiring education. Our curriculum is carefully designed to give all pupils the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to flourish both academically and personally.
We follow the statutory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum, but we go beyond this to provide a broad range of learning opportunities that prepare children for life in modern Britain. Every child has access to a wide variety of subjects, including English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Computing, Physical Education, Religious Education, PSHE, Music and, in Key Stage Two, French.
Our curriculum is:
-
Aspirational – encouraging children to aim high, develop self-belief and see that learning has no limits.
-
Inclusive – meeting the needs of all pupils, including those with SEND and those who are disadvantaged.
-
Progressive – carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills are built upon year by year.
-
Enriching – offering wider opportunities such as trips, visitors and pupil leadership roles to develop confidence, resilience and curiosity.
We place a strong emphasis on reading, seeing it as the key to unlocking learning across the curriculum. Phonics is taught through Little Wandle and supported with high-quality reading materials, helping children develop both fluency and a love of literature.
Personal development is woven through everything we do. We focus on well-being, healthy lifestyles, positive relationships and understanding of British values, so that our pupils leave us not only ready for the next stage of education, but also as confident, thoughtful and responsible individuals.
Our approach links directly to our school motto:
“Winshill Village: A Place to Dream Big and Learn Without Limits.”
This belief runs through everything we teach and every opportunity we create for our children.
By the time children leave Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, they are well prepared for secondary school and beyond. They know more, remember more and can do more. Most importantly, they are happy, motivated learners who understand that they can always aspire to achieve more.
