British Values

At Winshill Village Primary & Nursery School, our vision is to prepare every learner for life in modern Britain and equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the 21st century. We believe that cultural capital provides children with the essential background knowledge to become informed, thoughtful members of society who understand, respect, and uphold British values.

We recognise and celebrate the multi-cultural and multi-faith nature of the United Kingdom, and we understand the vital role our school plays in promoting these shared values. Winshill welcomes all children who are entitled to education under British law, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political views, or financial circumstances. We are proud to be a school for everyone.

The Department for Education expects all schools to:

“create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

These values are defined as:

  • Respect for democracy and participation in the democratic process

  • Respect for the rule of law and how it applies in England

  • Support for equality of opportunity for all

  • Support and respect for the rights and liberties of all within the law

  • Respect for and tolerance of different faiths, beliefs, and worldviews

Across the curriculum, these values are actively promoted. In particular, RE and PSHE lessons provide opportunities for children to explore and deepen their understanding.

We encourage our pupils to be creative, independent, and open-minded individuals, respectful of themselves and others both within school and in the wider community. Our aim is to nurture children on their journey through life so they grow into safe, caring, responsible, and tolerant adults—ready to make a positive contribution to British society and the wider world.
