Behaviour
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we believe that behaviour is much more than simply following rules. It is about learning the skills, attitudes, and values that enable children to thrive as learners, friends, and future citizens. We take an evidence-based approach, informed by the EEF’s “Improving Behaviour in Schools” guidance, which highlights the importance of consistent expectations, positive relationships, and teaching behaviour in the same way that we teach academic skills. Every interaction is an opportunity to model kindness, empathy, and resilience, shaping how children see themselves and the world around them.
Our motto — “Winshill Village: A Place to Dream Big and Learn Without Limits” — drives this vision. We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and aspirational environment where children feel respected, supported, and encouraged to be the very best version of themselves.
Our Approach
-
We promote positive learning behaviours such as resilience, kindness, respect, and responsibility.
-
We celebrate effort and positive choices through praise, Dojo points, postcards, and certificates.
-
We use restorative conversations to help children reflect, repair relationships, and learn from mistakes.
-
We recognise that all behaviour has a cause, and we work with every child to provide the right support.
-
We build strong home–school partnerships, recognising that parents and carers are children’s first teachers.
-
We provide additional support where needed, including nurture provision, ELSA, counselling, and our Inclusion Hub.
Expectations
We expect all our pupils to Dream Big every day by living out our school values:
-
Discover – be curious, ask questions, and explore new ideas.
-
Respect – treat others with kindness, fairness, and good manners.
-
Effort – always try your best, work hard, and show resilience.
-
Aspiration – set goals, challenge yourself, and take pride in improving.
-
Mindfulness – manage emotions, make thoughtful choices, and support wellbeing.
-
Belonging – be a good friend, work as part of a team, and show pride in our school community.
-
Independence – take responsibility for your actions and make good choices.
-
Growth – learn from mistakes, act on feedback, and believe in yourself.
Rewards and Consequences
Positive behaviour is celebrated daily through:
-
Class Dojo points, linked to our Dream Big values.
-
Pride of Winshill postcards sent home.
-
Verbal praise, stickers, and certificates.
Where behaviour falls short, our focus is always on helping children to reflect and improve. Sanctions are fair, consistent, and proportionate, and are linked to opportunities for reflection through restorative conversations.
Support and Inclusion
We know that some children may find behaviour more difficult to manage. For these learners, we provide personalised support such as:
-
Individual Behaviour Plans.
-
Targeted interventions (ELSA, nurture, sensory circuits).
-
Multi-professional support with our Pastoral Team and outside agencies.
Suspension or exclusion is only ever used as a last resort, when all other strategies have been tried, or when an incident is so serious that immediate action is required to keep everyone safe.
Working Together
We believe behaviour is everyone’s responsibility. Staff, pupils, parents, carers, and governors all play a part in creating a safe, respectful, and aspirational school culture. By working together, we ensure every child takes pride, develops positive relationships, and is empowered to Dream Big.
